When I was learning to drive I had my first car ready and waiting in the wings for me to pass, it was an Inca Yellow Clubman Estate on 10" Minilites, I thought it was the best thing ever.
On the day I passed my test my Dad was good enough to tax it so off I went driving about, I remember putting £10 fuel in and it lasting me a fortnight!

Well great to have another fellow aboard ..... Nothing like a Mini as a first car .... set for life .... well a life of skin'd knuckles and oil stained clothes anyway... *wink*

My biggest tip is buy the best car you can afford and take somebody with you who really, really knows Minis as it would take days to explain all the potential problems to list.

Buy a car that your going to be happy with for a few years and a standard car as the insurance companies don't like under 19/20 year olds with modified cars so you will either get turned away or be charged a stupid premium.
It isn't uncommon for a Sportpack to cost half as much to insure for a young driver than a rough old 85 Mayfair that has had a 1275 lump dropped in!

Never, ever, think there is no need to mention something to your insurance company ... even if you think it won't make any difference tell them before you do it!!! I had a friend a few years ago, well back in the early 90s, who tiger stripped his XR3 (all the rage then) but did nothing else to his car. He didn't think that was a "modification" but when he had a smash the assessor they sent didn't even get out of his car and simply said "we don't cover modified cars ... even just graphics ... your not covered". Anyway he had to take out a loan to pay for the 3rd parties car to be repaired and had a conviction and big fine for driving without insurance which made life difficult for him for the next 5 years!!!!

If your planning on modifying your car make sure the company you insure through will accept the potential modifications .... ask them before you take out the policy as they are unlikely to offer you a refund if you cancel the policy mid-term due to them not being able to cover you ... that and you'll be back to square one with the NCB
So in brief ....

spend a little more on a good car in the first place

buy a standard car that you are going to be happy with for 2 years or so

Don't mod it until you have at least a years NCB

...oh and no points or bangs otherwise you'll struggle in the 2nd year!

Be truthful to the insurance company

Hopefully that doesn't come across negative ..... it's teh advice I give every young enthusiast.

I wish it was still like it was when I first passed my test. I had a Mini that I'd started when I was 15 sitting waiting. It was only an 850 but it was basically a 7 racer spec motor (was shocking on the road but I was young and foolish), full adjustable suspension, cage lalalala. Was brilliant fun but attracted all the wrong sort of attention .... the only way I'd have seen more blue lights would have been to put one on the rear shelf .. LOL

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Good point roger, my 'std' 998 cost me £1200 in the first year, i did my pass plus so it was £850

Then my highly modified (but std engine) cost £600 in the second year, i couldnt even get insured for alloy wheels in the first year

and then in the third year a turbo was only something like £70 extra than the 998 was

on the note of convictions if your young just dont get any. my mate last year passed his test and 3 weeks later got done for drink driving, now his insurance premium is £2000 on a 1.2 clio on his dads policy as well.

if you send the insurance company pictures of your mini as requested, and you forget to declare something like bonnet stripes would they still f*ck you for it?

Well drink driving should carry a MUCH heavier penalty than it does IMHO but I have personal reasons for that.
Doesn't change the fact that if you do it your a complete bleeding idiot!!!!!!!

Bonnet stripes and things can be a problem for "the high street" but specialist insurers are more sensible. The problem there is specialist insurers don't often take on under 19s .... I know HIC can't take very young drivers on the special Mini policies they do.

As Nic proves it pays to keep your nose clean and not get carried away.

Just rang up HIC about insuring my NA 1380 (122bhp) with all the stuff on insurers don't normaly like (expect NOS) and it comes in at around £120 ...
Hate to think what my car would cost for somebody in there first couple of years ... 20 times that?????

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Happy bday soon!

I passed my test quite late (mainly due to not being able to afford lessons) at the age of 20.

This was my first car, a 1985 2litre laser capri. Bought her for £100, fixed her up for £200 and sold her for £750 at the time. This was only 2001, so the bugger would be worth loads more now.

Ive had five minis but this was far my fave. Ignore the dodgy grill, my mk1 grill was being fixed lol

Fair play mate .... just make sure you check the insurance will let you change wheels and arches (which you will need to do with StarMags). before you give them any money!

I'm sure the folks on here will look after you with parts and stuff ... just post wanted adds when required.

Get some pics up when you get it ......

P.S. are you going to the Riv Run in Newquay on the May bank holiday weekend?

try jootman james

iv also had a chat with a mate and he recons if you have your own pollocy and just add your mum or dad to it as a named driver it lowers it by £250! well thats what happend with his girlfriends insurance on her mini. not sure who shes with mind you.
that way your mum or dad wont loose anything if you end up claiming (hope you never have to!) and you can still build up your no claims.

worth a try i recon mate.

cheers
