Well looking like i'm really fining the limits now, just took my head off and it had cracked in 3 places, between the inlet and ex valve!

What a Fukc! this head i've been grinding for many years now.

Any way time is getting now and i now have shows coming up so........

does any one know where i could get, or buy off shelf a head already chambered out, as i'll do the gas flowing *wink*

iv got a head thats had the chambers opend to 29cc and the ports opend.

cheers for letting me know Josh, wow that's a biggy!, i've just sorted one out with Vmax.
I had to act quick as time now slipping on :(

Are you running lead free inserts ? If so, or even if not, could going down that route offer a repair solution ?
TIG the cast iron to restore integrity ?


My First Avonbar went down that road, mostly after I had larger exhaust valves fitted. Although there was one small crack when I sent the head to have the larger exhaust valves fitted ( not by Avonbar who originally done the head )
The cracks never really dropped performance, but did cause me conern after a while so I looked for a replacement.

I then had a new head done by "X" which had no end of trouble due to the offset guide method used to accomodate the larger exhaust valves they supplied..
The inserts arent supposed to pull out of the head *surprised*
They then bonded and grub screwed the inserts into the heads....Some pulled out...some ripped the guides out. Needless to say I was not amused.
They then did a different/replacement head, with offset drilled guides as per previous modified Avonbar head, which I had expected to be done in the first place.

This stopped the valve guide problem. Throughout both of brand "X" heads, my car would never run properly, rpm often limted to 5xxxrpm in 4th gear.
How this was so, I had no idea, and could never fix it. I changed absolutely everything to try and cure this problem. It was like a brick wall rev limiter just as the car was pulling very hard. Occasionally it happened in the lower gears too, albeit at higher rpm.
It was almost like fuel starvation, but it wasnt that, as it was like a missfire.

I re-installed the cracked head in a moment of desperation, and car was perfect again.
It was from that time, I decided I would never own a head with a modified combustion chamber, and I havent done. As I believe what they did altering the kidney shape, had serious side effects, at least on my car..

I then had Swiftune do me a head as their reputation was second to none, this time with std exhaust valves around 1997 I think and this head is still on it today, although it has done very very limited miles during the time since..
I opted for std size ex valves, to leave some material between the valves. Dont recall what size the inlets were, but not huge either.
I did not get lead free inserts, as bascially 4 star was still around back then !!!

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will
