ok now that i have my swanky compresser courtessy of Benross ! i am collecting air tools, i have the DA, an Air Cutter, ratchet. i have a lend of a spray gun which is ok, i used it to spray my block, but want my own for when i do me mk 1 shell.

what is the way to go ? i noticed whilst watching american hotrod and overhaulin that they all use gravity fed guns ? are they better than the suction feed ? is there a brand i go for for good quality paint gun........i noticed the head geezer on hotrod uses SATA but realised that those guns are like 300 quid !!

anyone got any advice or recomendations.

Richie

Sata have a very good rep and I know Roger is a fan of them, apparentlt there's a company out there who do very good knock off copies for a fair bit less than the Sata price.

I quite like Devilbliss although I've not used a Sata gun. I have used a clarke gun however and all I will say is never again.

I used a JGA to spray the MG last summer and TBH I think it was as good as my spraying ability, I don't think the finish would have been any better if I used a top of the range gun (I sure a professional would be able to do better with the right tools), but as I'm a tart I've picked up a cheap SRI, so come the warmer weather I'll give it a goo and see how it sprays.

long story there ! it has sat in their compound since 28th March. no paint......went in today and kicked off a bit, guy says he will prep and prime this friday, then sat morning i will go into the booth with him and he will show me what to do. it has to be sprayed white first (roof is white) then rubbed back and the main body will be painted yellow the following day the white will be a base coat to brighten the yellow further. will take pics though.

would be good to have a chat Rich if you come from leeds let me know i could get family rate at the local 5star hotel !

I do indeed like my Sata guns .... but then again the guy who trained me used them so it's what I got used to.

If your going to do a lot or make a living at it then I'd say a Sata Jet 90 or 95 are worth the wedge as is the Devilbiss GTi. Both can be had for about £200 if you shop around and £330 if you don't!!!

Kestrel do a decent rip off of the Sata Jet guns, budget for £110ish for a decent spec gun from them

The UPOL Maximum guns seem to be good value for £75 and I am going to spray a friends car with the one he has just bought as part of teaching him how to.

All that said I use a Clarke HVPL gun for doing filler primer and it has always been well behaved to be honest.

You need to make sure you have enough free air delivery (about 12 - 14 cfm to be safe) before you go for a HVPL gun of any type but once you get used to the different way of setting the gun (only about 10psi at the air cap) you'll never go back. It's a lot of blow though and most "hobby" compressors won't cope.

The debate on suction and gravity will rage forever and it all depends how you work. I have both type and use them differently for different jobs.

Gravity fed is easier to work with for most of the car but there are angles you just dare not put them at as none are truely leak free and the paint still needs to flow downwards to some degree ...... hence why I use a suction gun for priming as you can swing it around with total abandon without fear of interupting the flow or dripping.

If I was only able to have one gun it would be a gravity fed Sata digital.

The biggest thing is to look after whatever you buy, some of my guns look like they have never had paint through them despite being over 10 years old. Strip, clean and let it all dry / evaporate off before re-assembly and between coats gun wash them and then spray a 100ml of thinners through them before putting the paint in for the next coat (have to be quick working like that with 2pk .... why most pros have at least two matched guns).

Aim for something like a 1.4mm nozzle on a HVLP or a 1.8 on a standard gun and you can't go too far wrong.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Steve,

I have a JGA that is donkeys years old, still use it for regular primer.

JGA and GTi are very similar, it's just the air cap technology that moved on for the GTi, basically the GTi is just a HVLP JGA.

Should have mentioned that a good friend of mine regularly paints VW campers with a Clarke gun and swears buy it ..... he does look after it and has a fair idea of how to swing it.....

It's like many things .... you get what you pay for up to a certain level then after that it's mainly just paying for a name.

My George jeans I'm wearing right now cover my fat ass just as well as a pair of Levis but they won't last as long (not that it matters much if I paint a car wearing them ... which I probably will ..)

*wink*

HVLP gun won't be cheap, what compressor have you got? do you know the CFM output. If any one needs spares for a devilbiss guns drop me a message, i work for a disstributor for them and have all the tech documents on the guns.

I've been recommended to go for slightly smaller nozzles, I've currently go a 1.8 in my JGA and whilst it was fine for primer I found it a bit big for paint and lacquer, and I’m considering going for a 1.6 in the future.

I found my suction gun quite wasteful; when I sprayed the MG I had to do it as individual panels due to the size of my spray booth (gazebo) after each panel I was left with about 50ml of paint in the bottom of the gun, that I had to through away, now this doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you think about the number of panels on a car & times that by the numbers of coats of paint (primer, base & clear) it adds up to a lot of paint going into the slops bucket.

i think it is 8cfm, it is steves old one, here is the link. it has adjustable reg on it, and seems pretty cool, as a test i charged the tank then left my spray gun on constant to see how long it would take to drain, it took effing ages :)!!!! i searched for the JGA guns but they are all suction jobbies.

i have found an air fed mask (devilbiss one) though so will bid on that.

http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=142346

its actually a 75ltr tank i think, we decided at the time it was slightly larger in the cold light of day than we thought.

NOTE ON THE AIR FED MASK!!!!!!!

I say they are essential for spraying 2pk but you either need your compressor a long way away from where your spraying (likke outside, around the corner and down the road) or else you'll just force feed yourself fumes and die before you finish the first coat!

Also they take a fair few cfm themselves.

I use my old 2hp 50l compressor, outside, around the corner and down the road a bit on the end of a 50m hose (the above location is literally a different post code to my workshop!!!) for the air feed and let my main comp deal with the spary gun (14cfm free air and plumbed up so total system volume is 315 litres ..... my HVPL still eats it alive however!)

As for the cost of HVPL guns as I say there is a Clarke one at around £50 and the U-pol maximum gun is around £75. Both will do the job but I'd not plan on keeping either long .... not a problem if your only doing the odd car.

Alex, so how much can you do a GTi (or GTiW) 1.4 110 for??????

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...
