kind of OT but not. Identifying LSD?

Hi guys. The Gearbox in my S2 Escort RST has just gone. Looks like its the LSD (was bound to happen eventually) however i believe i have the same gearbox fitted to my XR2. (the guy i bought it off said he has fitted an RST box) However, as i bought the car on ebay and a fair few ebays are lieing C**Ts i cant be sure. I dont want to rip the box out of the fiesta, fit it to the escort then find out it was the wrong one.

Now i have checked the part numbers. They were both the same (9 or 10 small digits) but there were larger numbers also that did not match up. When ringing ford they said they couldnt help me with the part numbers and the best thing to do is jack the car up and see if both wheels spin the same way.

I am not convinced this is entirely true as i thought that the LSD would only work after a certain amount of power went through the wheels? Am i wrong?

Do any of you know a quick and easy way to tell if there is an LSD fitted in my XR2, i am finding it very hard to find a replacement box, i dont really want to buy on ebay as i have no proof the box is in working order

The RST did have an LSD.

Easy way to check, jack up the front of the car, (both wheels must be off the ground.

Put the car in first gear, try to turn one of the wheels, if you can turn it easy I doubt it has an LSD

think they both have it.

I thought all RSTurbos Escort S1/S2 and Fiesta had the LSD personally.

Most RSTs have 2 LSDs

1 x limited slip diff
1 x launatic stupid driver



Before I gave up fiddling with my friends Fords I worked on plenty of RSTs and yet to see one without an LSD.

The fiesta's defo didnt but sure S1 and S2's did

yeah the s1 and s2 escorts have them, but nor the fiesta RSTs (randomly)

I'll try what you suggested Jim, see what happens. Think i am just gonna buy a new box anyway now, rather than using my lovely little XR2 as a donor car, i love it too much!

I will own a series 1 RST one day, i love them ....a lot!

Here is my 90 spec series 2 in black. 180bhp and 189lbs of torque, body is largely standard. Debadged bonnet and now has genuine ford spots on


and here is a pic of my little XR2, tuned from 95bhp to 125bhp thanks to a ported head, kent cam, weber twin choke carb and a K&N filter

randomly enough i was chatting to my mate today and he starting talking about a fiesta rst he had found, and then the next conversation was about their lsd and whether the series 1 and 2 escorts, and fiestas came with them

he thinks the fiesta rst didnt but series 1 and 2 did

he'd be right
