Yo Chaps, just building a 1330 N/A Engine for a mate, just got the crank and pistons in and upon turning the engine over the pistons stick proud of the deck by around 2mm, the crank isnt stroked or anything like that. I have the hight the of the block an it is 2mm short. Am i doing summat wrong. I have built numerous engines and have never seen a prob like this before.

What can i do??

Cheers

leeds/wakefield.

do you know the blocks history??

either shorten the rods,[ouch] or take 2 mm of the pistons.

carl

edit, forget the shorten rods, it would have to be 4mm off somewhere to allow a hone to size.

pistons it is then

2mm off the pistons sounds like the only solution to me. The block was bought from (suprise suprise) Flea Bay!! Off to the lathe! Oh Carl i have PMd you by the way.

Cheers

Would it not be easier to source another block and have this bored rather than machine your pistons? Just a thought?

well i would turn the pistons as pistons are easier to get hold of than a block.
you will proberly find that the block has had excessive skimmimg in the past buy the sounds of it.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

more than likely to si=uit low comp pistons to get them flush with the deck.

ifyou are using high cr pistons then they will have a high piston gud pin to deck hight.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.

This is a regular occurance nowerdays, i've had it happen several times and it comes down to saving a few pennies when building a motor.

Basically, as others have suggested, the block has been used in a build before where 21251 (cheap) pistons have been used and the block skimmed substantially to suit the low c/r pistons, although this gives a reasonable cheap engine with better power than if the pistons were left down the bore it does now mean that the block cant be re-used bar using the low comp pistons.

If i were you i'd put it down to a learning experiance and keep the block aside, use it when going a 1380 and use some longstroke pistons (omega) or if you plan to do short stroke. Taking 2mm of the top of the pistons isnt exactly ideal and personally wouldnt do this.

I had to do this with a block myself, funnily enough after building a motor for a friend, I ended up using the block for my 1289cc engine.

The whole situation will start to bite folk in the arse as 75% of blocks are now being skimmed to suit these economy pistons, inevitably being used in high c/r higher performance engines for which they arnt suited. The motor ends up smoking badly after 5-10k and another rebuild ensues, whereas if they hadnt skimped £50 on pistons they would have had an engine which would have done 2-3 times the mileage at least.

sorry /rant over
