heywoo

I have heard that most people turn 998 into little screamers without doing a turbo conversion. these little cars seem to churn out some real bhp I have seen then to go to nearly 60bhp!!!!

How do people get this kind of power from a 998? i want to build one for my girlfriend to drive around as she is trying to get into the mini scene but doesnt want to get left behind on runs!

when i drove a 10" wheeled Mini last it felt insane !

is it relatively easy to make these things go like stink?

How do you fit the 12G295 head?

I belive that you need to pocket the block. how easy is that to do

a 12G295 is a cooper 998 head, so you do not need to pocket the block. What you should check before fitting one of these to your engine, is compression.

The last 1040 I built ran 84bhp, pretty much the same spec as Peter's but a different cam ..... Piper BP276 IIRC, long time ago ...

The 998 is quite a good little motor really, character really suits a Mini too.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Now I have 180bhp, (210 with nitrous), check out the 850 turbo build thread for more details and dyno proof.

This is the turbo section though....

Hopefully Roger & myself will be able to beat that with the 998 we're planning for my hill climber, not going to give any more away here but needless to say it will have to run in the mod prods. That said it'll be a while off as I've got a lot of welding to do and I need to sort out the 1293 turbo for the BOC, so you will hold the 998 crown for a while.

we should have a dyno championships like the engine masters competition in the us ,but with 998's,now that would be fun !specially running on the same dyno on the same day with direct drive off the crank to the dyno ,cheaper too!

Medusa + injection = too much torque for the dyno ..https://youtu.be/qg5o0_tJxYM

I'm only aiming for 160 bananas.

Based on my experience, I think this will be more than enoguh for most hillclimbs.

Of course more power will be faster BUT only if it's drievable. No point having 200 bananas and only using 1/2 throttle.

The more interesting minis in mod prod the better thhough, I'll take on all commers!!

Wil ..... Rob and I will see you at a climb sometime then to take up that challenge.

I'd not worry if I were you ..... if Rob drives on track like he does on the road they will have to find some way for the timing strip to operate a calander not a light beam *wink*

I think it's the only way to force me to get my finger out and do something.

I thought you'd a;ready broken the 160 barrier? as Roger says I won't be much of a threat with my current driving style.

Horsepower wars! This is just the first engine, I can improve on that :) 998 turbo dyno comp in 2008 then?:)

Sounds good as long as I can get the finger out. I've a feeling I'll loose but it should be a good challenge.

PS.

Roger, you're supposed to be on my side!

a thought.

what would be faster or more fun on the road, a well prepped 1293 with 6000 rpm 90 bananas and the same in torque or...
...or a 998 with 8000 rpm, 80 brake and 65 curleys.

Edit: Obviously a very open ended question.

All down to personal preferance, but I'd say the 1293 pluss i'd probably be cheaper.

The reason I asked is because i floored my 998 out a junction the other day and and hit 50 in second at 6000 rpm and thought I wish i had more revs, which isn't really that feesable on a 1275 without great expense.

I wouldent say that....

Most of the 1275 bits are pretty strong. I'd happily take a std (rebuilt) 1275 bottom end to 7k if i was going to use 7.5K or more i'd cross drill the crank and change the rod bolts for ARP's

I have taken compleatlyy std 1275 bottom ends to over 8k and never thrown a rod.

I think it's pretty obvious which is the more sensible road engine, but the problem is running a 1293 turbo mini in Motorsport, hence the fixation with 998s.

I am on your side mate, 100% ..... if that involves a bit of motivation using the "big pointy stick" method then so be it.

Your going to wind me up over Candice's build taking hugely longer than it should have so all is equal.... *wink*
