Just a quick one,

Do u reckon a a ford escort 1.8 petrol would have the power to safely tow a trailer with a mini on?

Just for my requirements for a mini, it looks like buying an abandoned project would probs be the best for me, and my mates got a double wheel trailer.

It will be fine for towing. You might need to drop out of 5th to hold speed on a hill on a motorway, but apart from that fine.

make sure u reverse the mini on (if it has engine) so the the weight is over the axels rather than the tow hitch so it dont A) rip ure tow hitch off, and B) effect ure steering lmao

Richie,

I've never loaded a front engined car onto a trailer tail first ...... A friend did that once with his Mini on my trailer .... his misses made him stop after about 1 mile and turn the Mini around on the trailer as it was swinging the car (a passat)around like cravy at town speeds!!!

You want just enough hitch weight so that when you brake and the hitch tries to lift it can't pick the back of the car up (scary). On my trailer / car combination about 75kg of hitch weight is required.

One thing I'd be careful of if towing a Mini on a trailer with an Escort is the gross towing weight of the combination might well be above the maximum legally allowed for that car ... if you get stopped it's nick nick time!!!!

I once towed a Mini on a Brian James hire trailer with a mates Orion .... pretty sure it was illegal (didn't know about these things at the time, I was young and nieve .. .wouldn't do it now)... if not it should have been .....

Edited by RogerM on 29th Apr, 2007.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

me rallx x car and all minis have gone on backwards on mine, i guess its just the trailler design, all depends on where the weight is if it is between the two sets of axels on the trailer then it should be ok, i drove with mine for 6 years without any problems at all.

top and bottom of it I guess is it all depends on the trailler.

at the time i was initially using a 1.2 K reg corsa.........ahem bit naughty to say the least. later went to Izuzu Trooper 3.1 Duty tdi and that thing towed the trailer like it wasnt even there.

Unless they have seriously increased the towing weight of the Escort NO.

I used a MK3 1600 a few years ago and towing would boil it on the hills - checked the towing capacity and it was only about 1000kg which is not enough either physically or lmore important legally

Well I tow my mini with my Citroen Xsara no problem. And with my old fiat bravo. Plenty of people tow with 306, astra, etc. All escort size. Remember the 1.8 enine is much better than the 1.6.

You will have to check the weights of the trailer and car to make sure, but it sounds OK to me.

I shall be using my '93 Escort 1.8 Diesel (non turbo) to pull my Metro about.
You'll be fine with a petrol. Perhaps upgrade your rear shocks, and your be fine. *wink*

Whatever way you load it it is VERY important that the nose weight is positive.

I have never seen a mini on a trailer backwards that I can remember. At events the only cars that turn up on trailers backwards are Imps and 911s, and some of the single seaters.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

towed with a 1.8 toyta avensis with no probs. also towed with 2.0d toyta corolla estate no probs. im sure youll be fine with the ezzy although not sure itll be legal due to weights so best check.

defo put car on foewards. my corolla has wibbly wobbly suspension and with mini on trailer the rear sagged a lot so decided to move the mini rearwards on trailer so the height of me car was better. it towed like a twat i was pulled into the first services and moved it back forwards. it was scarey and if you get a big woble on your trailer youll poo yourself.

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

how true, trailered a friends race car from oxfordshire to blackpool a few weeks back, got up to 70 and it was going from one lane to the next!
pulled in and made sure all the trailer tyre pressures were ok, but even so, it would be fine at about 60, but 65-70 ish and its brown trouser time

Using a twin axle trainer helps. The size of the car towing doesn't make much difference, apart from speed and going uphills!
Just look at those little crapy little things that tow planes around at airports!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

my trailer must have been fuckin tip top, along with the many others i raced against....unless its a northerner thing ? then again it was a full Peacocks factory built metro and trailer so perhaps they designed it to go that way......like i said in my first response, it depends on the trailer and axel setup !!!!!! i have countless photos of mini's, fiesta's, metro's, nova's, Ax GT's all reversed onto trailers, if i can get me scanner to work i will post em up, but it wont achieve nowt coz like i keep saying trailer setup is crucial !!

Butterpoppy, weights matter a great deal when you are trying to stop and the trailer pushes you into another car lmao !

EDIT: should add that when i un hitched my trailer it would remain level without use of a jockey wheel, the two axels on the trailer were pretty spread apart. i guess in my minds eye this would be ideal as when you apply the brakes the kinetic energy passes straight through the car forwards not lifting rear wheels or pushing rear wheels down and lifting front, just seems to make sense to moi

A escort sized car can pull a good ton of trailer/mini and alot more. Just sensible driving is all thats needed.
Never seen any front engine cars backwards on a trailer.....learn something new everyday I suppose

Each to their own but I am firmly with the "engine weight forwards" brigade, I've ALWAYS done it this way personally, except for one occasion; I had to recover a Toyota MR2, due to the awkward space available for loading the car it had to go on the trailer forwards, thus being a rear engined car the weight was at the back of the trailer. I will point out that I was using a twin axle Brian James 1200kg trailer, towed with a V8 Range Rover, so I had proper kit to do the job, and only had to take it about 4 miles. When loaded normally said outfit would happily sit at more than 70mph on the motorway if required, up hill down dale in crosswinds whatever, solid as a rock.
Towing the MR2 on the trailer at 45mph had it snaking about like Shakira's hips.

I'll personally NEVER tow anything on a trailer with the engine weight at the back ever again.

As for the Escort, I have towed a Mk2 Golf GTI (on trailer) behind a 1.8 Escort Diesel van before with no problems other than it was a bit sluggish to get going, I think you would be OK with the 1.8 petrol but check your weights to be sure you are legal.

Webba guess you just got to try it and see what is best for ya lmao, i am only telling you what i did, and it worked for me, but as Tom says Each to their own an all. like i say with mine the trailer was designed for the car a matched pair, so all the weights would have been distributed correctly. the reason they made it that way was you could whip the engine out of the car with it on the trailer, leaving the shell in situ. i wish i had kept the trailer now !!! hindsight is a twat !!!!

Have to agree with most - you need an element of nose weight on the trailer to maintain stability. If the trailer is too light on the tow hitch it is likley to lift the rear of the tow car over bumps etc leading to an interesting experience. The trailer is also likley to snake badly. I do remember a friend nearly closed the M8 in Glasgow because he loaded the trailer tail heavy - I was following behind - not a funny sight to see - god knows how he got it back.

One point though is that every tow car and trailer is slightly different so moving the car around on the trailer might be in order until you are happy with the way it tows.
