well, i have had a good and proper look at my turbo and it seems i do have some play on the shaft *frown*
never mind, the lot was only ?100
is rebuilding the turbo at home difficult, i know you need to put it back together exactly how it comes apart to keep balance,
could someone who has done it/knows how to please give me arough guide so i can get a rebuilt kit from iain and give it a go.
i would like to save ?300 for a rebuild if i can. But if i have to pay to get the peace of mind i will..

the whole rotor assembly. basically mark each rotor to the casing. take the shaft out last and put it back in first.

I forgot to mark the alignment of the casings but i left them loose while i fitted them up to the head etc and then tightened them.

the rebuild kits are ?50 including p+p aren't they??
if they are i think i'll give it a go, if i cock up, i'll just slking it back together and have it rebuilt proffesionally.
i'll check my money situation and send you a pm later iain
and i'll try and photograph the strip down to help anyone else who might want to do it.

how much play are we talking? the general consensous is turbos should have no play. but a very small amount is ok even new turbos have a tiny bit of play in them. i do only mean a tiny bit though if you do wanna do it yourself i did mine and ive done about 3k on it and it seems fine (touch wood)
the trick is to mark everything do the turbine and compressor to shaft so you can put back on in the exact possition they cam off. mark the casings too before strip down i forgot this to and it was a pig to get the oil return pipe on

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

there is enough play to make the turbine blades almost touch the housing on both ends, so i guess this amount is pretty unnacceptable.
i don't mind having a go at rebuilding because if it goes wrong i'll get i done proffeessionally and also i don't plan on having the enginebuilt for a while yet because of insurance reasons.
i just want to make good progress and do it as well as possible to keep it reliable.
but i'de rather not spend ?300 on the turbo if i can avoid it, so i can spend more money on other stuff

Ok...

1st things 1st... in which direction is the play...

up and down (or side to side!!) is ok, so long as the blades don't hit the housing.

The play u need to look at is in and out... ie in line with the shaft, this tells you the condition of the brearing end float...

Have you got a DTI guage?

no i don't have a dti, the play is up and down and i think the blades are not quite hitting the housings, i will check for in and out play later, i have work in a bit.

yep ?50 including p&p.

Talking to giallofly the other day and his turbo had a lot of play in he said, enough for the blades to rub the sides yet it didnt smoke or anything.

He's done a few turbo rebuilds i think.

*happy*

i just checked it again, there is no play if you push/ pull the shaft in and out, (there is but it is such a tiny amount you can barely tell)
up and down/ side to side the blades are so close to contacting the sides of the housing especcially on the exhasut end of the turbo, i don't think they are hitting but they are extremely close to doing so,
what is it?, rebuild or will the turbo be o.k.?
when i compare it to the kkk i have there is far more play, the kkk has none really

ok i`m no turbo expert , but like seen a fair amount of T3`s in my time , and like jon says , some wobble and some don`t , i`ve had ones off that don`t smoke at all but wobble like hell, and good feeling ones smoke there tits off , sure the film of oil helps the stop the play when running.

Everyone knows that instructions only have to be read if the thing doesn't work....

it might be ok... try it so long as the blade and casing dont touch...

the bearing are fully floating - they rquire full oil pressure to work as beairngs!
