My engine started to make a strange noise in the transfer gear area.. Took out the engine and removed the transfer gear housing to find out that the idler gear "shims" had eaten out metal of both the gearbox casing and the transfer gear casing. Apparently the engine builder didn't care about tolerances. I had only driven 3500 km's at only 8 psi with the car since the rebuild..

Anyway, I will have to rebuild the gearbox in a new casing and change the transfer gear casing (I still have a spare turbo casing).

I'm thinking of changing the transfer gears to straight cut ones as I intend to increase turbo pressure and don't want a transfer gear problem again. Especially since removing engines insn't my favorite job. What parts would I need to do the conversion and what's the best place to buy them.

Any help is much appreciated!

I was going to sugest that it might be more cost effective to get the drop gears with the timkin bearing that eliminates the ones in the box, then you could reuse your existing casings...

But if the guy cocked the drops up who knows what else is wrong....

So if I'm correct I don't have to use the shims with the timken bearing conversion? If so, how do you set the tolerances, or don't you need to?

btw: can you use the timken conversion for helical gears as well?

btw2: I will indeed completely rebuild the engine, want to make sure that everything is correct his time...*oh well*

the tinken set up is very good but at a price, if money is no object then go for tis set up, and yes no shims required.

personaly just use normal sc drops and shim correctly with a quality gasket as this is the normal place were endfloat will be a problem as cheep gaskets are thicker.

Not the first time i've hear this happen, by a long way! If it was proffesional outfit i'd be looking to go back and see what you can get out of them, theres no way in hell that it should have failed that quickly.

s/c drops are a good idea, but make sure you set the tollerances and ditch the old thrust washers just in case they were damaged.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

I'll try to get as much out of them as I can, but I definately won't bring my engine there again. It is a dutch company, so they will probably blaim the global warming anyway... (Although it is raining here at the moment..*happy*)

And sorry, two more questions: if I don't want the noise from the sc transfer gears, will I be able to use the timken setup with helical gears as well (so í'll be able to reuse the slightly damaged gearbox casing)? And do you need special tools or specialists to install the timken bearings in the gearbox and tranfer gears casing?

Oh, last question, why doesn't the timken setup need shims? I could imagine that too much play/clearance would damage these bearings as well?

I am intending on machine a helical set-up to do the "timkin" bearing conversion, will post once I've done it.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

as for now nico,
get the timkin set up available from minispares North ask for richard hes the man *wink*

the timkin idler SC is un- bustable but ,,, noisey for road use

anyway Roger please keep us posted on your conversion leyland should have done this from the start

is just idleness realy helica gear are much stronger as
Turbo Dave states,

given rogers approach mentioned above

its the way to go in my book, quieter but... when your after a quick FIX! its just there straight cuts

I'll buy one if you're thinking of going into production, I'm fed up of rattling idler gears!

I was thinking of doing a 'Timkin' to the helical gear. I'm no expert, but I presume it would need a taper bearing to take the side thrust??

Anyway, Roger count me in when you go into mass production.....

Nick.

I thought of using the timken bearing on a helical transfer gear, but I can imagine that the side loads caused by the helical gears could damage the timken bearing as well, especially because the timken setup doesn't use shims to minimise play. Please correct me if í'm wrong...:)

Anyway, if the helical timken conversion works I'll order one right away and use the sc setup in another car..

It does need a bit of thought but I'm sure I have a solution.
