Hi ive got a turbo'd aseries, 1293cc, roller rockers, turbo cam, omega dished pistons (cr 8:1) fiesta intercooler.- its in a midget not a mini so a bit more space!

i might be changing the turbo - what would be the best garrett for the job - are the gt15's big enough for 10-12psi at max 6000rpm?

the standard t3 is excellent at top end but is a bit laggy - is there a turbo that will maintain the top but also give more lower down?

thanks
Rob

Look at the Mirage website. He does a few hybrid T2s that could be good.

as Will said T2 is a good option, well known specs, and even if a little old it does work nicely at these sort of boost you doesn't need roller bearings 360's etc
then if your not money concerned I would buy a brand new gt2052 , ploting some maps can help to find the best comp trim (your set up should have a max cross point at 15lbs and 1.75 and min 8lbs some ratio) make sure you are leeting a little place above the last point in case if you want a little more :)

Ah nic, I have been meaning to ask this, which one did you get? The T2 hybrid or the T25 jobbie?

I think that the GT1752 of a Saab is better than the T2s.

Do a search on "GT17".

Only problem will be mating the manifolds to the 38mm diameter turbine inlet.

what is the boost range of a hybrid t2, say one that could boost at around 17-20psi on a 1293 engine, without needing a rebuild every 5000miles (if posible?)?

or would it be best to use a t25 for that sort of boost? or would it be more laggy than a hybrid t2 as described above?

i know every engine boosts differntly due to differnt cams, cr etc etc, but just to get an idea.

hope that makes sence! lol

cheers

The trouble is - that everyone's perception of 'laggy' is different... There are those that say a T3 has a barely noticable lag; then there are others who liken a T2 to a supercharger...

The T25 turbine falls somewhere between the T2 and T3 - so is probably a halfway house; with that in mind - a T25 could be better suited. The Rover Tomcat unit is a good starting point if you don't want to consider the latest GT offerings.

I think Dave, that it's peoples understanding of what exactly lag is.

Those who know, would say that a T3 has barely any (and I would agree to some extent). Problem is that it has a high boost threshold (commonly referred to as lag).

the trouble with t25 is that the smaller a/r is 0.49.
the problem with t2 is that it is limited above 2p/r by reliability and by 15lbs (+/-150bhp) by speed/flow (note it's still a very good unit under this number my first one gave literaly boost just above idling)
the problem with the t3 is his weigh (wheels one)
an hybrid t2/t25 will give t25 flow with t2 smallers a/r (0.35/0.41/0.47) but at cost and generally need centerhsg upgrades for high p/r (360's , BB)
so as for engine size cam c/r valves camber/castor tires cwp compromise have to be done
but:
today a gt 20 or gt17 , depend on needed flow will do all this with garrett factory research department behind so
there is enough modified turbos here to know which set up give what; then it's just a question of going on knowed maps and plot boost treeshold, max boost/at max torque and at max hp (3 points) and select which ones is the more efficient in the prefered usable revs
