hi guys,checked oil looks a bit thin,slight smell of petrol.
any ideas.

Don't use it!!!

Sounds like fuel is coming up the jet and flooding the engine - fuel pressure too high or float jet not closing.

To check either, remove the pipe that is usually blocked off just forward of the fuel inlet to the carb.
The engine will start and run fine at tickover with this open, but won't boost...
What you are looking for is any fuel coming out of it - as it sits above the normal fuel level in the carb. If it does, it confirms what i said above... If not, then further investigation everywhere else is needed!

hopw old is the oil...

blow by from worn rings can cause oil dilution... but so can many other things!

I had exaclty the same problem with my new engine. Bought a Gunson Lo Gauge and set the fuel pressure properly and the problem stopped.
