Having just changed the oil in my daily drive I was putting my tools away and notices a magnet from a hard drive sitting on the work bench, If you've ever seen one you'll apreciate how bloody strong they are(some kind of rare earth magnet or somthing),

Anyway I thought i'll stick that on the bottom of the oil filter, should stop a few particles getting in the engine.....

I then got to thinking about this a bit more, and was wondering if on an engine that the oil filter screws directly to a ferrous block (like the MPI block) could this cause particles to stick in the oil ways due to the block becoming magnetised, and possibly come loose later?

discuss....*laughing*

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

good idea been using this method for over 30 years

the answer is no! as the oil filter housing is alloy

only the filter is ferros

unipart used to produce an oil filter for this
it was called part number GFE 1

they have a small coin shaped magnet in the bottom (internal)

last i spoke to richard at minispaares north they have them in stock they are around a fiver though

but if you care for your engine whats a fiver ........nothing!

I was recently told, at a Unipart shop, that the premium filters were no longer made, and I know of others that have been told the same. Do minispares definitely still do them?

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.
But..... Maybe We do know! ?

Not sure what the oil filter fitting is on the MPi block but if it is steel or the block is directly threaded then the magnitism could be transfered .... theoretically.

To what level it would be would require investgation .... anybody got a tesla meter?????

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

is it possible to stick a magnet directly to the block? Or in other words, if one got filings from a block, would they stick to a magnet?
