how do all, i have a very decent flywheel but there is some light pitting on the tailshaft taper hole, what can i do, it's not too bad

also can i fit a pre-enguage ring gear onto a flywhell thats had an inertia type ie are they interchangeable? i have the tools and minerals to do the job but i have'nt got a pre-enguaged flywheel on the bench to compare

cheers all

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

lap the flyhweel in with valve grinding paste and see how it looks.

make sure the the nose of the crank sits back from the face of the flywheel though or there will be no tightening it up. sure you wont take that much off but its worth a check.

ok gonna do that when my crank comes back from machining!

the pitting/corrosion is'nt to bad, its only 2 spots, the flywheel i have is an ultralight item, yet to get a backplate!

could the face of the hole be covered or sleeved if deemed abit beyond it!

i know its a tapered hole & would proboly be a few £££ to have machined correctly, my local machine shop does white metaling! of old/obsolete bearings
cheers

my crank is back & i've given it a good lapping mr Benross :)

should the crank nose be inside the edge of the flywheel taper hole, there is the piece that locates in the end of the tailpiece before the bolt goes on to, thats quite a tight fit! the pitting is a bit worse than expected! its not a smooth lapping line due to the pitting! if you get what mean, i only paid £23 for the flywheel & its a genuine farndon ultralight!

i understand the flywheel has to be tight onto the crank, at the end of the day its how the engine gets started by the starter

oh that was the other thing, my mini is pre-enguaged & the ultralight flywheel is inertia, can i swap the ring gears over, the verto seems to be pressfit & the pre-verto welded on?

should the crank nose be inside the edge of the flywheel taper hole............in short:- YES!

torque the flywheel up to 150ft pound

the killer for the fretting problems is.... most peepsd do not lapping the crank enough!
Dont forget to lock the tap over

the ring gear question ( i dont know ?)

I would get a inertia starter. Chances are the ring gears are narrower on the farndon flywheel. And also as you say the ringgear is welded on on the ultralights to make them stay where they are. This should be done on a new one too.
