I know the diff casing is matched to the gearbox casing bit how much of a problem is it to interchange these? Is it a deffinate no-no or can it be done with extra work?

You can get them machined but would probably cheaper to source another complete gearbox casing.
I seriously doubt it! |

i have seen them matched before, but its by no means an easy or ideal job. You need a good selection of diff sections to get it close to being right. I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

You dont need a slidehammer. Just do exactly as it says in Haynes.
