i know that in the very near future i will want more power, and the current engine will be very tired, so to be prepared for it, i want a new engine and gearbox ready to drop in. i dont just want to pay someone for it, but i want to learn how to do it so i can have a go my self, the next time, but i will also pay for who evers time at the same time, i dont expect this service for free. i supose you have to be close enough to me so i can come and take part and have experiance your self so i have the reasurance of giving you my hard earned:)

i am now a little drunk, but i have been thinking about this for a while and i mean it, and i have the funds to put up front! and will, lol

thanks!!! Dan - in leeds/bradford btw

pot dan, seriously, spend the bucks on that bill sollis how to build a 1380 dvd, its a decent vid to learn the basics on how to put a motor together,

my 998 turbo is my 1st build ever!!! yep 've jumped in a little at the deep end but i thought fck-it! now or never, i thought for ages about having a bash & thanks to help from rogerm above, tom, benross, feebs, mini13, iain, 1071s, will & ben to name a few on here felt more confident to have a go!

its like technics lego really, just taking ya time & checking over what ya've done is the key!

any advice needed & the chaps on her are ace i've found!

for an example, i boght the bill sollis dvd & 2 days later i boughts a 998 motor & box & stripped it in about 45mins, degreased & cleaned the lot, took the core plugs out among loads of other stuff, got advice on spec reading stuff on here & the david vizard book eventually, now my block is machined this week, head should be ready & i have a chap in my miniclub that does mini gearbox's for a living to any spec & he's agreed to show me how to recondition my own one! (it shows how to do that in the dvd too) so hopefully i'll have a turbo 998 fully built soon

i'm sure anyone thats rebuilt/recon'd there engines on here can say, its easier than expected!

give it a go dan :)

SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

the Search-section on this forum is blummin superb & simple to use, unlike some other forums, without the search-section & the help of this bunch of chaps on here i'll never be able to !!!Start the day with a 998cc turbo!!! :) i'm getting closer though!

Tom Fenton says: I have it all, make me an offer

Clubminiflip has a point there ...

That DVD is supposed to be very good, not seen it myself so can't say 1st hand.

The key to building a motor, like most things worth doing in life, is to take your time and don't allow yourself to get wound up over it.

The one thing I would say is that for your first build (well any really) it is best to use a well trusted machine shop who you can be assured will provide you matched bits that will fall together. The reason I say this is that you won't know exactly what to look for when problems pop up.

Also make sure that you don't need the car tomorrow .... best build a second engine and swap them when it's done than leave yourself without a car.

There are plenty of us on here who have built more than the odd engine who should be able to guide you.

Nothing like the satisfaction of hearing one of your own motors burst into life for the first time ..... even when you've built quite a few.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

thanks for the replies! i will get on with it then, i have a 1275 turbo engine spare in the garage, will go and buy the dvd and see what we come up with:) expect a lot of questions, lol

i do really want to learn, the only reason i want experienced hands to help me is because i know, no matter how hard you try, you cant guarantee to get it perfect, first time without practice, and i know you learn from your mistakes best and all, but i don't want any thing major to go wrong and the car be off the road for any amount of time.

thanks for the push:)

From time to time AC Dodd runs engine building workshops, I realise that he is miles away from Bradford, but I would strongly recommend going along to one if you can.

The workshop I went to was all in one day (left Bristol at 4 in the morning & got back around 11 in the evening) I think it was advertised on a Mini forum, don't ask which one as I can't remember, but a good place to look would be the ML Motorsport pages: http://www.mlmotorsport.com/mlm-forum/
