A mate used to manage a Renault dealership and had one as a company car for a while. Given he was a salesman he wasn'r going to tell me any problems with it though! I do recall the brakes were very impressive but the back end could break away if provoked

Trophy and F1 models have brembos with the F1 having drilled disks. It is nice but I am tight and the idea on spending £19k on a Renault is a bit too much for me considering the Type R and all the other nice hot hatches are the same price. I hate the big rump too, puts me right off.

dont they have an lsd too?

id almost have one, i dont like the look of the megane, but it seems to suit it with the kit on, and theyre supposed to be a fantastic drive.

The only thing that puts me off has been the joy of the ownership that my clio hasnt been

been in a type r is quickish but not what id call amazing, not great unless ur in the 'v-tech zone' either tho as an everyday car its quite nice
woz up at castle coombe on monday saw a 205 gti dick an m3 and a mk4 astra keep up with a tweaked evo 6 so just shows it aint what youve got its wot you do with it!

i had a 206 gti (about 4 years ago) that was fairly solid.. i know that the French cars have a bit of a bad rep for being poorly built etc, anyone have any scary stories to put me off the Megane? because i like the look, and the engine is great.

I can only comment on the RS Clio 182. Mine has performed faultlessly (except an alternator bearing failure under warranty) and it is an absolute hoot. It isn't solid with lots of squeaks and rattles but it has everything you want (auto xenons and wipers, leather, trac control and stability management etc) but is still a feather weight with 6 point something second 0-60 times and 38 mpg to boot. I myself would be tempted with a nice RS Megan (fat butt and all) but as I say it's £19k for a Renault which is the same money as the Jap and German rivals.

my m8 who has got the type r had a cooper's bmw the bloke at his bmw dealer rekoned that the type r was the best hot hatch on the market and didnt blame him 4 ditching the cooper's! i have heard lots od good things said abouth the megane theo ive been put off ever getting a french car since my 306, to be fair it never let me down just wasnt built well at all. after that i got a 97 328 beemer touch wood nuthins gone wrong only got tyres and suspension bushes done on it and it goes easily aswell as most hot hatches these days and i get 30 mpg with the smoothness of a 6 cyl engine! best bloody car ive owned (mini's aside!)

Cheers chaps, Jay, love the 182 great car!, but need something a bit bigger - hence looking at the Megane, get your point 19k + is a fair bit of cash, would probably look at a 6 - 12 month old one.

Nick, test drove the type r and i thought it was 'ok'.. you have to rag the tits off it to get the best from the engine, want a bit more grunt lower down.

Stig, thanks for the tip off, will get the mag.

Nic.. not been lovin your Clio as much?? how come?

cheers, Mark.

Yes yes, a year or 2 old Megane is ideal. I would as they depreciate like a stone (another reason why I couldn't part with £19k for a new one). I would only consider a trophy or F1 model though.

my 182 caught fire the first day i had it thanks to an alternator fault, renault wouldnt cover it through the waranty but eventually did as a good will gesture. Whilst this went on i couldnt even get a courtesy car from them

Ive had other annoying faults such as a water leak into the inside, leaking washer bottle, none functioning head light washers, dodgy front struts, and a perishing steering wheel-All of which are common faults with them, so ive taken it to the garage to get them fixed telling them exactly what it is but theyve all taken more than one trip to get the problem sorted. Through october and november it was having to go to the garage every week.

Its a great car and does everything i could ever have wanted-when i had a few problem free weeks i thought it was fantastic, but in general it just causes me sooo much grief. Then again i do 2000miles a month in it. Im going to get rid of the thing while its still worth something but im not sure what wil replace it

Benross is right the astra has turned into a proper car these days.

For my money though it would have to be a VAG car with the 1.8T lump if your interested in go and the TDi if you interested in keeping a fat wallet.

I'd never have a renault .... never seen one that works for more than a month without trouble (and when they do go wrong it's nearly always telephone numbers to fix)..... your main car should be reliable .... the Mini will break down enough for both.
If you have to have a french car make it a Pug as at least they have something approaching reasonable parts prices for when they do go wrong!

Just my honest opinion.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...
