I use Halfords Semi-synthetic 15w40 in the Mini (Purple can) and Shell Helix Plus 10w40 in the Subaru.

IMO both good oils. I change the Mini every few hundred miles and the Subaru every 6000.

Actually that Millers oil is probably the best, I'd forgotton about that. The only reason I don't use it is it's expensive and I can't buy it locally.

Used to use valvoline 20/50, but got a lot of gear and cam follower wear with it. Now use Ford Super 10/40 - 7 quid a gallon, and seems to have stopped my followers and gear flanks from pitting after only a few thousand miles...
STILL use the valvoline for the dashpot mind!

use valvoline 20/50 for ages and like dave i use to get big wear as you have seen on the follower and every where.

this last year i used Torco 20w50 fully synthetic oiland i thinks its very good but you do pay a price for it, may followers are pitted this year but not as badly.

T3 as for the how the boxes feel i no people do use thinner oils some times, but when ever i've used thiner oils 5w 40 or 5w 50 i have found that the boxes do indeed feel not as smooth, ie they tend to grab like when the baulk rings are worn as your changing gear, be ok for racing i guess as less power loss!

and on a worn engines Ie mine (3000 miles oil) LOL i've found lower oil pressure to with the thinner oils.
