The clutch on the Midget screams when I select a gear after the car has been sat for a few hours. After the engine is warmed up and I've done a few gear changes the noise goes away.

I'm a tad worried about this as it's already munched through one release bearing this year and I'd rather not pull the engine again if I can avoid it.

Any ideas? I'm hoping it's just a bit damp due to the lovely summer weather we are experiencing but I fear it could be worse.

My old sprite had an oilite bush in the end of the crank. If these get cooked they dry out and that could give rise to the sort of noise you suggest mate.

If the car was driven any length of time with a slipping clutch in it's life that could explain it.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Does it scream when holding the clutch out or when you start to let it bite? The former is release bearing, the latter moisture on the plate. If you have to replace the bearing again, get a roller setup from Peter May.

'Where does the engine go?'

It starts screaming when you start to let it bite, but then won't shut up if you push the clutch in all the way.

I'd forgotten all about the spigot bush, but it was in good nice when I replaced the clutch back at Easter.

I hope it's just moisture as I've had enough of taking the engine in & out of that car.

Spigot bearing! Was it new when you replaced the clutch?
I bet it's as old as your car.
What's all this about moisture? Surely you are kidding yourself as all cars would be the same if it was that.

If it still screams with your foot off the pedal it's not the spigot bearing, because the shaft bearing and crank are all rotating together then.

Steve1275 that's not what he said in the original post, but if that's the case it's the Fan belt!! If your foot is off the clutch pedal it's not clutch related

I replaced the spigot bush about two years ago, when I first pulled the engine, as the original had disintegrated.

I'm pretty sure it's coming from the clutch as it's all nice and quiet until I touch the left pedal. Putting it away this evening I could almost play tunes on the bloody thing.

It can only be the release bearing or spigot bearing. My opinion is the spigot bearing but both are an engine out job, so just replace both and have done.
I don't know what all this sh*t is about dampness but you can rest assured it's some bullsh*t from some one who did not want to take an engine out to fix the clutch

Rob, be careful to make sure that the spigot bearing is running ture to the crank .... wouldn't be the first one I've seen not to be in there straight!!
