I'm trying to get my head round the blue book, and as far as I can tell there's a minimum requirement when it comes to running a cage, but is there a maximum spec you're allowed?

From what I gather the car has too be a steal monocock (sorry about the spelling) and space frames are banned, but how far can you go with with regards to using the cage to help tie the car together? I can see obvious advantages of a "Miglia" style cage but I can't work out if it's allowed or not.

In basic terms you can weld a cage in yes, and it can be used to stiffen the shell. The major no no is fitting the cage to suspension mounts. If you do that it can be classed as a space frame and move you into another class.

Actually, Ben, in Mod Prod you can do what you want. Only in Roadgoing classes is the rollcage prohibited to "assist any direct suspension loads"

See Blue Book E11.3

That is interesting I was always under the impression that putting the roll cage on the suspension points was a no no. However you mean L11.3 (not E11.3)

It is interesting that it dosen't mention a roll cage at all in L12. It does say things like chassie strengthening is allowed though so full miglia type cages are fine.

So the answer is do what you like in mod prod, but be carful in road going.

Too true Roger.

As far as I'm concerned the cage should be as light as possible. So ours is a boggo SD bolt in (fixed diagonal) with door and dash bars.

So slightly more than the minimum required, but not much.

I might (if I get round to it) fix the uprights to the A nd B pillars.

I'm going for a slightly different approach, if I've got to carry the weight in the car I might as well make it work for me in terms of stiffening up the shell as much as possible.

Will / Ben,

Am I right in thinking that you've tubed the rear arches?

From further reading the blue book (L11.3.3 & to a lesser extent L11.3.2) I'm trying to work out if tubing of the rear arches is allowed, as it's not the kind of thing I want to have to change as a scrutineers is happy.

I think I may need to find a local scrutineers to bug.

Yes we do have tubbed the arches. It is another grey area. Are the rear arches concidered part of the monocoque? I need to look in the book, but I think you can alter arches to clear wheels, I will check (or I guess wil will have a look)

Either way for a good car it needs to be done.

L12.3.2 Inner wheel arches only may be modified to allow the attachment of damper mountings.

So depends where inner becomes outer. I suspect that it's streaching the regs a bit, but unlikely to be noticed.

I take it you can have a strut/tube between the rear turret tops, as long as they are not attached to the roll cage, Like we have on the metros?

In Mod Prod you can even attach it to the cage.
