std clutch struggles with about 80 lbft of torque...

so its only just engough for std applications!!

Most go non-verto, rally plate and orange or grey diaphragm almost as soon as they start tuning!

what's the difference between the grey and orange diaphragms?

Basically the colour denotes the clamping force of the spring (which holds the friction plate against the flywheel and transmit drive from the engine to the gearbox).

It starts at blue (old cooper s), then orange, then grey and finally double grey.

Orange seems to do up to about 130-140 bhp (I haven't tried this thou so I am repeting what I have read before). After that you need a grey... but even these can slip at about 160bhp apprently....

The problem with double grey is that it destroys the thrust bearings on the crankshaft very very quickly (like less than 1000 miles). So unsitable for anything other than race use.

My sister is so fit I won't show anyone her picture

Lake District

My mate ran a standard Verto clutch on his Turbo for a year.
His car made 132 bhp at the Minimag Turbo RR day, the clutch never slipped .......

It's just strange when thing like this happen. As you say the Verto clutch is rated for a lot lower power outputs than that.
But it worked ok in his motor ... ?

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Yeah same here, i ran one brand new clutch which slipped at 8psi, then on an identical engine i could run 12psi and no slippage and that was on a well worn clutch!

Very strange!

It's not right to rate clutches by bhp...
Thye are torque limited devices. The 'book' figures for an orange are 90 lb ft, and the grey is 115 lb ft.

My grey started sliiping when the 'pads' on the AP organic race/rally friction disc were worn down at around 125 lb ft, although a new one would do a lot more. Modifying the backplate lugs meant it held around 160lb ft (last years tune), but once a little worn, it gives out.

What we need is a 'titon' style, or twin-plate organic for our little boost-boxes!

Dave is right... in my 1st post I said about torque not bhp :)

Torque is turning force..

BHP (power) is how much work you do in a set time!
