I personally don't think there is much (if anything) to be taken out of the front subframe. It is quite a stressed component. If you want a lighter one buy a titanium one.

Where and how were you thinking of taking the weight out?

For the amount of material you can probably safely remove you could just have a shit or a hair cut before you get in the car

i always trim around the holes that the driveshaft come through, purely so i can fit a built up inner pot joint through

I just heard on the grape vine that Phil Short had run a modified / lightened front subframe. By how much and were I do not know.

Just wondered if anyone had any details.

AL- LMAO.! Booked in for a hair cut and a trip to the loo is planned some time soon. *happy*

lol, the only reason i said hair was cos i had quite long hair recently and cut it off and was suprised at how much it weighed.

To be honest im interested in losing as much weight from my car as possible too and joeybabys trick enlarging those holes is a great idea

Yep.

I'm going to attack it and see how i get on.

I'm sure it can afford to lose a bit of weight.

I'll post some pics when done.

I saw a GTM once with 6mm or 8mm holes all over the front subframe (and I mean all over it).

I'm going for (strategically as can be *wink* ) quite large placed holes. Plus a bit experimental reduction.

We shall see how we get on.

Worth a go. i thought.

all the extra weight helps with traction methinks

The front end needs to lose as much as possible. You are never going to lighten the pig iron engine much so every little helps. As for weight giving traction, well if the car is lighter it needs less traction, in theory. Whatever the weight of the car the weight on the front can be adjusted with propper suspension anyway.

I've taken a lightened subby out of my car to put the tube one in - lighteneing the std subby with generous 20mm holes saved 7kg over stock frame - well worth doing, as long as you don't take it from the stressed areas - around the towers, top arm mountings etc it will be strong. As a by product ligthening the long arms which poke out towards the front will generate a nice crumple zone rather than the std "spears" offering you a gentler decel rate if you crash it.lol!

this subby is sitting in my shed if anyone wants to persuade me to sell it - took me many hours to get it to the level it is now, has adjustable tie bars, fixed neg camber bottom arms etc.

As for traction - Ben is right that corner weighting can tip weight forward - suspension kinematics plays a huge part in traction as well as natural frequency of the unsprung mass. I've eventually pulled my finger out and will be optimising spring rates for traction and suspension hard points as well - if it works or turns to shit I'll let you know!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

I am amazed that you got 7Kg out of a front subframe. I can't see many places that I would like to put a hole saw. Bits here and there maybe. I think I will have another look.

JohnK - Would it be possible for you to forward a few details of your lightened subframe. Pics would be nice.

Just to give me a little guidance before I get too carried away.

Also has anyone seen the Zcars A series replacement front subframe yet..?

7kgs is a big weight to be saving, like SiP says can we have some piccys. Im in the process of cleaning and stripping the subframe ready for painting. Im definately going to do the trick with driveshaft holes.

i agree with others a few pics of lightend front subbys would be superb!

i have a spare rear frame i want to tackle with a holesaw or i'll cut it & just leave the beam that bolts to the heelboard & radious arm mounts, then a set of coilovers on the back,

i have a spare front frame, i would,nt mind opening the holes up where the pot joints could come through! not sure where you'd take front the front frame, it all seems to bare a load to me!

SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

the Search-section on this forum is blummin superb & simple to use, unlike some other forums, without the search-section & the help of this bunch of chaps on here i'll never be able to !!!Start the day with a 998cc turbo!!! :) i'm getting closer though!
