This is problably the most dim witted question..........but.....
When people rebuild engines for the road, they obviously have some running in time. What about race engines? You can't do 1000 miles etc before a race! *indifferent*
Prepared for piss takes on this one.....its going to be a simple answer.

Well I built mine and it's now in the car, it's been started for 5 minutes and that's it.

I'll probably go round the block (500 yards max) then racing on Saturday.

First few runs I'll take it easy, probably restrict it to 6k.

I suppose a race lump gets rebuilt after a few hundred miles at the most?

20 mins as Jimster says then give it death. BUT......
I have a belt drive so time the cam in at 106 but what do you time it to with a chain if youre not running it in? 106 then retime after a few races?

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I'm only used to a few clutch/gearbox changes, head gaskets and servicing.....so new to the game of racing. Got to be honest, know f*** all about it :)

Well the race engines we have at work do 30 mins on the dyno then get 10,600 rpm for the other 1000 miles of their life.

It all depends on the revs for rebuild intervals, i hear that sevens and miglias only do a couple of meetings on an engine!!

sounds expensive antman! Surely at least a season with an engine?

Edit...beer kicking in!...Typos inevitable!

as the guys say - 10/20 mins mod revs to knock the edges of the bearings, I usually change oil immediately after start up then after 20 mins of running - then onto the dyno!

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

It depends on your definition of expensive. We do an engine a season with little testing and a rebuild is about £20k but then the engines are worth £50k and the 70s - 80s F1 cars they are in are worth hundreds of thousands!

The theory is that a good race engine should last 24hours or running.

About a season of circuit racing.

i asked the same question of my local engine builder a while back, he said we'll run it in on the rolling road...

Settle the cam bearings in then cyclic loading either on the dyno / rollers or some runs on private land (a mid week track day is a good bet).

In the past I have known people have a "slave" car in road legal trim that they can drop a motor in to run in .... a fair bit more hastle but then you can run it in as you prefer. In fact I have known enigne builders with slave engines they can run cams / followers in with before transfering the cams to the race motor so they can go straight into ring settling cyclic runs!! Now that is too much grief for me to even consider!!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

The race engines i have seen down under are usually run in on an engine dyno after being built. Some, occasionally on a rolling road.

On an engine dyno they can vary load (dont know how so dont ask)
About 15-20min running around 3000rpm and you can HEAR things loosen up... its amazing... then off she goes... rev it as far as the owner wants... 5k, 6k 8k or more...

Pete.

most top running miglia and seven racers have 3 engines. one in the car, a spare in the van and one being rebuilt.

from what i understand they last one or two meetings and then are changed. i dont think they can last a season.

as for running in, i thought (and you can shoot me down in flames) the race engines were built with different tolerances than road engines,
