Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

I have perfectly good rear brakes on the mini but unfortunately with the car being a racer, no handbrake.

I want to retro-fit a handbrake to it.

Its currently short of quadrants, cable, lever etc but also the bits inside the rear drum/backplate.

What i'm trying to now figure out is exactly how it goes together and if any bits have been ground off the backplates etc.

Any photos etc would be great of a built up rear drum.

Its going to be fun putting it back together with one, i'm guessing i'll be missing the centre bit that turns them through 90degrees before going to the quadrants as well.

I've never really took a lot of notice of handbrakes until not having one!

Cheers
Iain

Ps if anyone is cutting up a car with the handbrake brackets or has any old backplate bits that would be great!

Even better if someone wants to fit me up a handbrake for a few pennies thats good too, although i dont want to travel far. I'll try to get it done myself but short on time!

You could bolt a set of old qaudrants on instead of refitting the old style runner ones. This would prbably aid the handbrake imo.

yeah i was thinking along the lines of making the inner ones move, was thinking of just using some sealed bearings for them to run on.

Looking at it i need the lever bit inside the back plate, the bit that splits 1 cable into 2, hand brake quadrants.

Does the handbrake and quadrants run along the top or bottom of the radius arm? and is it a subframe off job to put this little lot in?

Carnforth, Lancs

The yoke, lever bracket AND adjuster nuts do NOT come with cables.

Wil_h's list is otherwise comprehensive - just make sure you don't get the twin cable type lever!

Also:

You can't fit the quadrants with radius arms on. and they are on the bottom side of the radius arm.

I'm also unsure about the cable locating brackets on the back plates, left and right hand ones. These might still be attached to your car though.

Here is the full list then, soon adds up! + VAT and postage as well.

Have to see if i can find a few of the bits. I've spotted some of the levers on ebay so fingers crossed!!

Thought the radius arms had to come off. balls.

The guide for the cable is in the bottom of the subby isnt it? hopefully means i wont have to resort to taking the subby off as well. next problem is most likely the fact my exhaust will be in the way!

I have spare long clevis pins (go through the radius arms), quadrants(not KAD ones as I just put these on my car) and a brand new front section of the hand brake cable if you want them?

For an MOT you need a mechanical brake .... otherwise a line lock to the rear would be good enough.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

No you dont Roger *wink*

If its pre-68 you can have a hydraulic handbrake.

I had thought about one but it would be a fair bit of mucking about as well to be honest.

Ordering all the bits tomorrow *smiley*

OK Iain, your correct about that. Thought that as your car is an ex-racer it wouldn't have an identity to use and thus you'd be registering it from scratch as 'rebuild' or similar and going for an age related plate to go with a "donor" car docs you had.

If you have it on an early ID then just slot a line lock in ..... far quicker and easier than faffing about with a mech hand brake on your car! Not like your going to leave it parked on a hill in the high street is it .. lol
