personally i think the only thing that would decrease the weight will be composite, ive seen people use cheqerplate alloy, even sheet ally, but in my mind its got to end up weight more then before.

lol cardboard! with a bit of varnish it may do the job!!! hehe *tongue*

i was considering some sheet plastic but i thought sheet alloy would be lighter, i'm only thinking maybe 20swg thick so should be lighter than te steel hmmmm

I'm presently making some dash panels out of an aluminium composite board that sign shops use. Its 3mm thick and is plastic sandwiched between to 0.3mm layers of aluminium. Very light, pretty strong and damned easy to cut shape and drill.
Also available in a variety of colours!!

Be very careful ...... believe it or not the parcel shelf actually does quite a lot to maintain the shape of the back fo the car in an accident.

If you remove it even a light knock could completely wreck the alignment of the back end and leave you with a scrap shell!

Trust me ...... I know!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

I was gonna say that too! Its the top of a box section which makes up the rear end!

Im sure if you took it out it would flex the shell a bit under cornering too. The parcel shelf is pretty light anyway what with the speaker holes cut out!

Cut out your door bins and seat swob if you havnt already and are looking to save weight!

i'll be bracing the rear arches, & i've took the rest of the other metal out of my car, rea bins, seat squab etc etc,

if its a bit dodgy accident-wise then i'll consider leaving it roger-m! its my daily driver but i'm trying to remove as much weight as i can, i have no stereo/speakers, this is the drivers mini

if you want tunes i "try" to sing to my passengers, thats why i dont hve many passengers lol *happy*

Too Late for me mine doesnt have a shelf anymore. But the roll cage goes through the seat pan and onto the rear wheel arches!

I also have no stereo. For long journies i will be making a box with an amp and some speakers in with a jack for the ipod which you can take in and out depending on the journey

bracing back to the rear turrets will help control the torsional loads, probably better than the shelf would. The problem comes when somebody in a company car runs into the back of you when you do something unreasonable like stop at a red light of fail to enter a box junction when there is no clear exit!!!! I have seen a freinds car litterally pop open like an inflated paper bag with a minor impact when they had the shelf out. Car litterally separated at the rear vertical seams!!!! Needless to say it was a write off and all from about a 20 mph impact.

If it is a daily driver then you need to be thoughtful of that sort of thing. When I was living in London I was always getting tapped from behind due to my unreasonable desire to drive ariund teh city as per the highway code!!!!!!

I agree with not removing the shelf as it adds a lot of rigidity and strength to the back of the car. My autotest car has no rear seat back or shelf and you can flex the shell by hand if you push on the top of the C posts!

As for the aluminium composite stuff - my local sign shops supplied me and cut to size, you can also pick it up on egay I think
