Hi there,

Today i unbolted my rear subframe and started to remove the rust... some pics below
my question is how can i keep the rust away now that i removed it? with inox spray? And what do i have to unbolt in the front to remove the front subframe?

Thanks

Aberdeenshire, scotland.

I reckon that red Oxide is pretty good stuff, although spray paint dont seem to like it. I have done my subframes in red oxide then put heaps of hammerite on top.

If you have disconnected, brakes and ancillaries from the subframe then i think its only the top pillar mounts (two large bolts), Rear subby mounts that bolt onto the floor pan and the others which mount to the front panel. Then you should be able to lift the body off it.

Yeah use red oxide or galvafroid which are both great for stopping and protecting from rust, but are both buggers to top coat over.
So you could give it two or more coats of spray paint to cover it or one coat of thicker brush on paint.

Use the thick grey zinc phospate meteal primer sprayed on (may need thinning) flatten with wet and dry then paint as normal. A friend of mine used this method on a clasic alfa 10 years ago and still looks good, as for the subframe can you not get it powder coated.

DO NOT powder coat your subframe, it is not a durable finish really as one stone chip and water will get underneath and it will then flake off in big chunks....

stoke-on-trent

i used red oxide on mine, followed by grey primer and 3 coats of steel wheels with 2coats of laquer on top - took a while and alot of paint but sooo worth it. Agree with Tom - someone i know paid a fortune to have his wheels done and after three months they needed another refurb

Yes the prvious owner of my car had the wheels and subframe powder coated and it lasted OK but wasn't worth the grief and not as good as some of the methods mentioned already. Powder coat doesn't flex either so cracks if you put it on steel wheels and you're fond of hump back bridges.

zinc rich primer is top, or hammerite pink primer, excellent products, cant beat hammerite products or por15, subframes you can get galvenised quite cheap, i know a place anyhow, then prime& paint ova the galv

it comes from the prep, take away all the rust & prep & paint it well, brushpaint all the nooks n crannys 1st then spray on your 1st coat, leave it to dry fully, flat it then coat fully, 2pac is good, super durable topcoat,

just be super super thourgh (spelling) in ya prep & as in ya photos, use a drill with a wire brush to get rid of it all, or if you have the spare cash, get ya subbys gritblasted! the galvenised, the prime n paint (said twice i know)

looks like ya doing a good job though

SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

the Search-section on this forum is blummin superb & simple to use, unlike some other forums, without the search-section & the help of this bunch of chaps on here i'll never be able to !!!Start the day with a 998cc turbo!!! :) i'm getting closer though!

I normally use a zinc rich primer as Club' states .... Zinc 182 is a good product.

I often use a surface prep like Marine Clean first (frost.co.uk)

Top / colour coat has to be POR15 thinned and sprayed on .... looks great and last nearly forever!

I don't like powder coated parts for the reasons Tom suggests. Even if you get the parts etched first (not etch primered, acid etching) it will still come off with time. Also nearly impossble to "touch up" so will look shabby quickly. At least with paint if the stones can get at it so can a paint brush / air brush!!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

To remove the radius arm you also need to remove the bracket on the outer end of the radius arm. There's 2 bolts behind the arm into the subframe, and 2 underneath the subframe.

Soak them well with release fluid before trying to remove them :)
