I have started building my 1293 turbo engine but have already ran into problems.

I got my crank end float at 6 thou on standard thrust bearing so fitted a set of +3thou thrusts and then got 0 end float. can you fit one 3 thou and a std thrust on the other side?

Fitted the cam, a new avonbar phase 2 cam and new cam bearings(fitted by morspeed), and the cam has a tight spot. I removed the oil pump and it still has the tight spot so its not the pump. I take it this is not normal. is the cam likely to be bent or could it be a bearing problem? The cam only has a tight spot when turning it clockwise, when i turn it anti-clockwise it turns smoothly.
I then fitted the timing gears (kent duplex variety) and with all the crank shims off the crank gear is higher than the cam gear by about 10thou. Can you get shims to fit on the cam end or have i another problem here? i have fitted one of dave coxons alloy back plates, could this be too narrow and would fitting 2 gaskets under this help?

Any advice appreciated

Daniel

just quickly measured the depth of the alloy backing plate and it appears to be abotu 30-35 thou thinner than the origional which would suggest the problem with the timing gears.

I removed the cam and the middle runner on the cam looks like its has been rubbing so i think either the cam or the bearing is oval.

yes, the crank thrusts dont have to be equal either side

if you turn the cam a few times, you should be able to spot the shiny spot on the cam bearings, might just need a ream

The cam is rubbing on the middle bearing. Will this sort itself out as it wears or will i need to sort it properly?

I am going to fit the origional timing backing plate and see if that recifies the alignment problem.

I too got standard size thrust washers when building my short motor. Dropped the crank into the main bearings and only one thrust would fit in!!

So took my block crank and thrusts to the local engine speacialists who machined the blade on the crank so that both thrusts would fit in. The crank spins quite freely but i have 0 endfloat! :s

The guy who machined the crank said its good not to have any endfloat so when it runs in it will create its own when it runs in the thrusts!!

Not really sure i believe that tbh

hmmm, yeah i read somewhere you need a little endfloat to stop seizure?! i think its also something to do with the clutch when it pushes on the end of the crank but i may be talking rubbish.

I now have 3 thou end float which im happy with,

now onto the cam issue...

i had the opposite problem at first, standard thrusts and i had too much end float, then when i used +3thou i had no end float so i used one of each.

Are you sure the thrusts you have are standard and not an oer size thrust? Origionally the engine would have been machined from the factory to have end float on standard thrust bearings. Is it the origional crank? what make are the thrust bearings? if they are cheap versions they may not be to the correct size.

stowmaket suffolk

if its a new cam then just get the parkerising polished of as this normally helps. just use 400 wet and dry with some oil on the jernal.

as said upstairs use std and +3 set to get the end float to 3 thou.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas
