Silly question but i cant work out which way the fan goes on and if its put on the wrong way is it serious? Is it indented side to the water pump or the other side with shiney washers.

It should be marked on the fan IIRC.

the blades are curved so when fitted the wrong way the efficiency of the fan is greatly reduced.

No, When the fan is fitted the wrong way the hot air from the rad is drawn into the engine bay, instead of being forced out.
