I was intruiged by this photo in the latest minimag:

It is supposed to be a picture of the damage to Calvers state of the art N/A 1330 engine.

What intruiged me was that he appears to be running a de-beaked combustion chamber.

So is there an advantage to this mod as well as lowering compression?

As far as I'm aware, Viz always kept a beak, although sometimes only minimal.

Wil, is your latest head de-beaked?

No, the current head has a beak; but all previouse heads have had the beak removed.

To get low enough CR on a 1275 for a turbo you need to remove it, but on a 998 it can be kept.

there are 1275 turbo heads with low compression and the beak still in place...

Yes, but I've not seen a de-beaked chamber on a full race N/A 1275.

But then I've lived a sheltered life.

Thanks Axel. So a de-beaked will give lower compression if my logic makes sense. Beaked version with deeper dish in piston will give same compression?

jason,

as I understand it, the spark plug starts a fire, this burns across the chamber to the other side, the "beak" "spreads" the fire to help it get to all the corners of the chamber quicker/better giving a mre complete burn.

How does the idea of that beak causing a hot-spot and creating det stand up nowadays?

seems not to be an issue.

The beak mostly affects swirl. This makes the cylinders fill easier= more hp.

Also it helps squish area.

I had 7.5:1, and a std, but smoothed chamber...

Wouldnt say my pistons were top spec to to achieve a low CR.

I would never remove the beak, and destroy what is quite a good combustion chamber shape.
Its that shape for a reason.

Running unleaded fuel on a 'leaded' head with beaks youll get massive wear in the seats. If its de-beaked then your not going to get the same wear problems.

Thats the way I understand it. In big bores its not so much an issue. With 998 and 1100 heads it makes much more difference.

Can you elaborate on this ?

Because what you said, makes no sense to me whatsoever, and it seems a couple of other people.

the shape of the chamber has nothing to do with valve seats and valve seat wear whatsoever.

He's talking about the valve guide boss, I think!

I understand swirl. Never heard the term beak before. I'm having another alchohol fueled dim wit moment. cheers anyway m8 :)

pristic... surely if running unleaded in a leaded motor you use additives etc.
Either way...I thought thats a valve & guide issue also.
