Thinking a couple of years down the road, and looking at possibilities for a high revving engine (sorry but I'm keeping the spec quiet)........

I agree wit Roger. There are loads of grades of alloys that can be stronger than steels.

Fuckin ell guys . Steel is an alloy. In a discussion about materials and metalurgy, not wheels, could we please use the proper terms?

thought an alloy was a non-chemically combined combination of metals - therefore since steel is a combination of carbon and iron it's a metal in its own right aint it? Edited by stefaz on 12th Jul, 2007. On 23rd Oct, 2009 sim_ou_nao said:

All I said was alloy, I did not say what type, if you decide to assume I meant aluminium alloy then that is up to you!!!!!!!

Ok, so why would anyone want to go for a titanium flywheel when an aluminium alloy one is as light, more than up to the job and a fair bit cheaper? Isambard Kingdom Brunel said:

pub bragging rights ...... a ti flywheel is worth about 200% extra bananas on chav land due to the fact that you could then use the engine upto 1,000,000 rpm.

varl, do you have the "ring gear" as an integral part of the ti flywheels? Not sure if you could treat the ti to make the teeth lasted (in a limited eace car sense) when used with a pre engauge starter?

OK, so I think it's reasonable to say there is effectively no difference (other than cost) between Aluminium alloy and TI as far as high preformance mini fly wheels are concerned.
