Thinking a couple of years down the road, and looking at possibilities for a high revving engine (sorry but I'm keeping the spec quiet)........

I've been looking around at various flywheels and it would appear that there are three options; Titanium & EN8 Billet Steel & EN Forged Steel.

Ignoring weight and cost for a minute are there any issues with any of the materials in terms of strength, especially considering the forces going through a high reeving high power engine.

Basically what are the pros and cons of the different materials.

What about aluminium alloy? Fastcarl makes these I believe?

hum, although it's light I wouldn't have thought aluminium to be strong enough.

Rob,

the right grade of aluminium, treated properly, replacable crank interface taper and with a friction surface that can be replaced should be fine .... would probably be my choice ... I think FastCarl's flywheels fit each on of these criteria and more.

I agree wit Roger. There are loads of grades of alloys that can be stronger than steels.

Its just all stereotypical. Alloys are soft. Steels are hard, and minis rust......

the last one I agree with LOL

Fuckin ell guys . Steel is an alloy. In a discussion about materials and metalurgy, not wheels, could we please use the proper terms?

Aluminium alloy is soft, but steel alloy is not, is that what you're trying to say?

V, don't you mean an alloy of iron and carbon?!

stoke-on-trent

thought an alloy was a non-chemically combined combination of metals - therefore since steel is a combination of carbon and iron it's a metal in its own right aint it?

All I said was alloy, I did not say what type, if you decide to assume I meant aluminium alloy then that is up to you!!!!!!!

LOL!

Ok, so why would anyone want to go for a titanium flywheel when an aluminium alloy one is as light, more than up to the job and a fair bit cheaper?

pub bragging rights ...... a ti flywheel is worth about 200% extra bananas on chav land due to the fact that you could then use the engine upto 1,000,000 rpm.

varl, do you have the "ring gear" as an integral part of the ti flywheels? Not sure if you could treat the ti to make the teeth lasted (in a limited eace car sense) when used with a pre engauge starter?

OK, so I think it's reasonable to say there is effectively no difference (other than cost) between Aluminium alloy and TI as far as high preformance mini fly wheels are concerned.

The next question is; is there any pros or cons of steal* (both forged & billet) over alloy** again I'm thinking about the centrifugal forces on the flywheel and the energy in the fly as well as the weight & cost of the materials.

Cheers

Rob

* = EN8
** = Aluminium Alloy
