I am thinking of throwing a turbo engine together from an assortment of parts I have lying around.

I pulled a crank out an engine and have found it to be in good condition, however there is some scoring to the big end journals (not a lot) will the crank be ok to use providing plastiguage measures correctly? or shall I get it veneered to be sure?

Also a block I had rehoned last year by a competent machinist has me slightly concerned.

Will it be ok to use condsidering the honing machine has not quite found good metal (slightly scoured the surface) or will it smoke like a chimney?

all other bores are perfect

Thanks for the help

Id get the crank ground and it might be worth getting the block honed at an engine workshop.
Has the crank been ground before?

The block will need a rebore then, It has already been honed to the maximum clearance.

the crank is std/std, however I have all new bearings lying around which seem a shame to waste.

By the way, what look like wiggly scratches are just bits of the towel its wrapped in (under the spare bed!)

Try getting the crank polished, then if that doesnt sort it, grind it.

I seriously doubt it!

leeds/wakefield.

are you telling us you paid someone to hone the block and he left it with half a job done,
in the past i have had a standard block honed untill it was cleaned up [ bores looked like new] , this left me with 0.009 skirt clearance,
this was built into an engine i used in a track day car,, it revved to 9000 in the lower cogs and passed almost everything at many trackdays,
if the crank journals are round , give it a polish and use it,
what were the shells like you took out,
this is the definitive indication to the crank condition,

Looks like I'm an idiot for accepting the block, it has been honed by 0.005 (live and learn)

The bearing shells were in good condition.

I'll just forget the idea, I just thought I'd try to make something from a heap of bits lying round such as perfect 998 box and transfer casing, good turbo, crank and (now bad) block.

I'll just rebuild my complete turbo engine in one go at some point. and keep the above stuff as spares.

I've just had another rummage in the garage and found another standard size block, I just checked the ring gap and the block appears to be unworn - also original honing marks still visible. so a slight witht the honing machine to deglase the bores should do the trick nicely.

So I may stick a wanted ad up for some standard turbo pistons in a short while.
