I have a 998 to be my daily driver but, i'm really confused i couldn't get it started and tryed everything. When i got the engine timing gear was off.

Someone said to me that the timing was out so striped it all down pulled the timing and all apart.

Now i can't for the life of me get tdc anyone any ideas. Whats the best way to do it engines in the car?

If you put the two shafts in positon, to put the timing gears and chain on, the rockers are tight on the valve spring, no clearance. I can never work out if its tdc or not?

It is TDC when the inlet valve on cylinder 1 has just closed.

Best way is to:

Take the rocker cover off

Take all the plugs out

Put it in gear

Push the car forwards till the inlet valve shuts No.7 (counting from left to right)

Then once inlet has shut, push car forward till the piston is at the top of the stroke.

The best way to know when its at the top is to shine a torch down the plug hole till you see it reach near the top, then If you haven't got a DTI, rest a thin screw driver on top of the piston and slowly pull the car forward (use higher gear as its less jolty) till you feel the piston stop moving.

If your not using verniers then this should get you as near as you need to be to get the sprockets on in the right place and the marks on the pulleys should also line up. *wink*
