i took a saw to an old vice today to make a drift to get the relase bearing off the plunger & the bugger wont shift, any ideas on what i can do, the bearing is slack & graunche's so gonna change it, its on a pre-a+, i understand theres two types, a self centring later type, are they interchangeable?

Isn't there a circlip type retaining ring on the release bearing?

Been a while since I looked at one in detail.

theres no circlip on mine, i got the plunger thing out of the frying pan casing by taking the cotter pin out & the release bearing is on the end of the plunger, seems to be an interfearance fit! i'll get some pics in about an hr, it'll explain better than i can type lol *tongue*

Drive it off, some of the later-early type sit on a reduced diamter spigot that lets them float a bit, the early-early ones are an interference fit onto the plunger, just sit the bearing resting on top of a vice and drive the plunger out of it.
