Hi,
I am currently around halfway through my mini turbo project and am after some advice...

The car is in the "shell" stage at the moment but i am planning ahead as to what engine i would like. I have decided it has to be a turbo (for obvious reasons !) and due to the limiting factor of the mirage manifolds, i want to fit a bulkhead box .

my questions are as follows...

1. Does fitting a bulkhead box reduce the strength of the bulkhead a lot ?

2. Would fitting a roll cage counter this weakening ?

3. Not knowing exactly what set up i will use, i want to fit a bulkhead box that will fit all possible setups ( t2,t25,t3 - metro manifolds, other manifolds etc.) Which box does everyone use or do you all make your own ??

Thanks
Ryan

Will my project ever be finished !!? hopefully you guys can help !
Its only been like 10 years in the making and I'm only just assembling my engine!

1) Not especially, as long as it is welded in to a good standard. I've certainly never known anyone have a problem.

2) Not really, it does nothing to brace the bulkhead. You are better off fitting solid mounts to use the subframe to brace the bulkhead. You can also bolt the subframe through below the bulkhead box if you wish.

3) Any of the boxes you can buy will do the job. There is a guy on here does them.

hey thanks Tom,

What do you mean when you say "bolt the subframe through below the bulkhead box " ?

do you mean fitting a solid spacer between the subframe and bulkhead and bolting through it ? do you have any pictures of this modification ?

Also, any ideas who it is on here who does the bulkhead boxes ?

and lastly, what thickness of meterial should be used for the boxes, i would assume it should be fairly substancial ?

cheers

I'm worrying about that corner on the right sticking out buddy. I've a fair suspiscion that the air intake pipe won't get past that.

Just back to your questions....I'm seam welding as much of the shell as possible so I don't need a rollcage. Insurance was a big consideration in my thoughts.

Good job 1573wx :)

If your turboing it.....I think a roll cage is the least of your probs with insurance. *wink*

fooookin heck! everyone on here has very big weber box's lol!

thats ok then if its stuctually ok to do!

my dads minivan will e running a weber & i gotta weld the weber box/upsidedown battery box in it & i think he may go the turbo route eventually so gonna put the two box's in, saves greaf & its space thats needed anyhow! not sure where to place the weber box yet but looking at these pics i may get him to purchase another batterybox & weld two 2gether for a double, like danboys for instance! looks cracking, if anyone has a pic of a lill weber box (battery-box size) that would be ace!

wheres that bloody grider again *happy*

CMF, The reson i did a large airbox was to be able to fit a cold airbox system when running NatAsp, it's also very useful to fit other ancilliaries out of the way. ie fuel filter, washer bottle etc. etc.
Worth doing in my opinion.

Dave
