Checked out my gear box during the current rebuild, pulled the lay shaft to see that it has some slight pitting on the bearing surface one end, no suprise really, but the amount it has worn where the little end locates in the case is a lot more prominent.

It has worn down 0.2mm across the diameter of the shaft, and this can be felt slightly when you grab it and try to move it in the box.

The pics should show what I mean, sorry if they arent too clear, but It's an awkward thing to photograph.

Well, a new layshaft looks to be in order here....
Don't know what to say about the wear at the end - most likely it was undersize, or the bore in your casing is damaged. Check it out...

Have just been out and tryed another layshaft from an old box, (an original one) and its much better, the box hasnt been damaged at all thankfully.

I guess it could just been down the the torque forcing the main shaft and lay shaft apart?? thus putting pressure on that area?

Just glad I noticed it sooner rather than later.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.
