I am thinking about it. If I do then I would definintely leave the mainshaft bearing housings in situ, as they are a good datum point.

If I do it'll be 25mm plate. *happy*

How do you work out the backlash needed? As I haven't got the original box to measure from, im not 100% certain on what the centres would be?

id just lay the two shafts out parallel, then move them apart until the gears have a tiny amount of play then measure them .

edit , i realized matt , i have a honda engine and box ,a cb500 , in bits ,you could look at that and see what the backlash is that way?

You'll never cut a 25mm aluminium plate with a frickin lazer, might be able to water jet it.

Matty, what bike is the gear kit from? Ill send you a PDF of the manual. Bike books are so much better than car manuals.

Robert - Hmm I'll have to see if that is the same. Do you know if its the same and the bigger CBR engines?

Jim - The gear set is from a VFR. Cheers for the offer, ive got the manual (took 45 mins to download) it was a MASSIVE pdf file!

To be honest I think most of the cutting and shaping is going to be done by hand. I don't think I could measure all of the obscure angles of the box accurate enough. lol

Ive just had a look at the centre web, some sections are 20mm+ others are only 8mm. *oh well* I'll have a measure up of the input shaft tomorrow and maybe start some more cutting!

Australia oi oi oi!

there is a bloke who has made 2 in australia, he runs a 16v head turbo doing like 200+ atw's through this box and had no problems, but we only have the picture of the box on the back of his ute in the original thread i posted.

no one knows where he is & i think he nicked davids original idea.

if you like at my original thread there is a photo with a plate he made as well. the answer may be on that photo for you.

Yeah cheers Nick. I spoke to David from ausmini (who was doing the conversion) and by the sound of things its no where near completion, so im not going to have any luck with finding out info of what to do.

Am I right in thinking that no one has ran one of these boxes before, that we know of?

Are fair enough, I thought it was madmatt with the 16v turbo running a 6 speed jkd box.

Does anyone know who that guy is with the completed box?

From talking to David, its sounds like he hasn't got much further than me at the moment. Originally I thought that completed box was his, which really confused me when talking to him! lol

Which plate do you mean? The one on the centre web? Its hard to see how it fixes to the web and whats been machined off the web from those pics. I asked David for some more pics, but not luck. *oh well*

One for you chain drilling fans. Im too impatient to wait to get on the mill at work. *happy*

It nearly lines up with the reverse gear hole. I need to fit the rest of the gears on the mainshaft to see whats what.

6082 T6 would be my normal choice, I'd not heard ot 6082 T651 before but a quick Google just says it's a stress relieved version of 6082 T6, so should be even better (but if you're welding it in you'll put all the stresses back in anyway :) ).

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???
