Looking good Matt!! seems like your doing a hell of alot on the cream one! will have to pop over for a beer and a gander at this and the Mk1 at some point! been a while!! haha.

the stub is screwed inot the case ,nd its job is to act as a retainer for the spring legs ..

i have pulled the spring and gear lever assembly away from the case to show bits , but it normally lives with that peg protruding through the cut out in the plate .

Ah I see, does the shifter lever bolt straight onto that peg that sticks out?

Also has your gearbox got a gear position/neutral switch?

Im thinking of using a gear position switch for reverse. When the box is in true nuetral (between 1st and 2nd), the gear position switch will release an interlock that will then allow me to activate an electric solenoid to engage reverse gear.

no the shifter is on the other side of the box ..that peg is the end of a shaft that goes right through to the other sdie ,and then yes the lever goes on it .dont know about the neutral switch matt , ill have a look .

Ah well Ive just looked at mine, and the lever connects slightly differently to that, as its on the same side as the indexing part. Looks like that is one of the differences between the gearsets. *oh well*

Probably a very very daft idea but as you will be welding aluminium into the mini box anyway.
How about cutting out the sides of the motorbike gearbox that retains the bearings and weld that into the mini box?
I have no idea about bike box dimensions, reverse gear, input, first motion...so very likely that this cannot be done..
Just a thought..

Hmm, not sure if 3 bolts at either side will be strong enough to keep upper part mounted... Could always weld those together....

Its a good idea, but the main concern I have with the welding is distortion.

My plan is to make up a plate to be welded into the centre web, then make 2 plates that sandwich it to house the bearings and mechanism. I should be able to get most of the complex drilling and shaping done out of the box, then bolt the plates in and line bore it. *oh well*

Good point.
Maybe it would help welding with bearings and shafts in place and doing small sections at a time?
Don't know how much it will distort; not enough experience welding aluminium.
There must be someone on here that has enough experience welding aluminium to tell you what would happen or have tips for you.

Im definitely going to leave the 1st and 3rd motion shaft bearings in place. I was also thinking of making some solid spacers up to go between the two plates to be welded in, then use some clamps to hold them tightly in place.

Another problem is that the more clamps and shafts fitted during welding, the more difficult it is to get the torch in.

Im making the centre web in such a way that it is welded from the outside of the box, hopefully it'll make things a little easier for the welder. *oh well*

Im the same, im not sure how badly aluminium distorts with welding?

I don't suppose you have an old broken mini box to just give it a try?
I think I would do that before going for the real thing; take a bit of straight aluminium, weld it in and see how that works out..
(but I suppose that is not the 'Matty-way' of taking on a challenge)*wink*

Nice work, I like how you've done the bulkhead so far Matt, useful as i've been trying to work out how im going to do mine. Still trying to figure whether to make a box and fit it in whats left from the current one, or remove it and start from scratch like yours, interested to see it finished.

With such a thick front plate, what happens to camshaft endfloat? I understand that there are no followers on the cam, but do you "reach" the oil pump?

I machined a recess in the front plate to make it the same thickness as the original steel one. I then used the original retainer thrust plate to hold it in place, so pretty much nothing has changed from original. :)

A small update on both the build and box...

Made a new steering column mount, and more importantly got to use the tig for the first time. *happy*



New dash fitted.



Centre web and various other bits chopped out. Mainshaft should be ready next week too. :)

Ive been thinking about the oil pickup. Apart from the initial priming of the pump, could there be any problems with running a pipe that is nearly twice the length of a centre pick up? *oh well*
