Its an idea, but I don't fully understand it?! I know the works metros did it, but how did they seperate the gearbox from the engine?

Anyone got any photo's? Ive seen the thread JF started a while back but still can't work it out. :)

Out comes the grinder again then. *happy*

Ive been having a look at the drop gear end, and I don't think its possible to ditch the idler gear now, as the spacing between the crank and input shaft for the gearbox is just too far apart and would still require to have some custom gears made up. *oh well*

Just a bit of trimming to do now. Im not sure wether I should grind the fins down either side of the plate, so its got something a bit more substantial to be welded to?

It turns out I can't use standard input gears toegther so looks like its going to be some custom ones. Ive been thinking about running the engine backwards to avoid the extra gear, the only major problem I can think of is the direction of the oil pump, which I can't see an easy solution to?

I would grind off the fins, so that the weld is to the rigid part of the case, and not to a wobbly web stuck out.

Oil pump wise, can you not use a pair of gears to drive it, this will reverse the direction as opposed to a belt or chain drive, where the driven pulley rotates the same way as the driving pulley.

I've just taken an E series engine appart and the idler gear in that is fooking huge!!

Interesting shaft arrangement on the idler too.

I'm guessing on the E series the drop gears are all the otherside of the clutch like on the 1800's?

Its very similar to the A series. The main differencies are the head, valve gear and five main bearings.

The flywheel is doweled and bolted onto the shaft tail, rather than a taper. The clutch is pretty much the 'pre verto' type clutch arrangement, the primary gear is consideribly larger, the idler gear shaft is about 6" long and extends along into the gearbox casing, with both its bearings in the gearbox casing. The oil pump is in the sump and driven by a shaft from the top end. The head is an 8 port head, but has the same layout as a 5 port head, Over head cam chain driven. Its certainly a different concept to the A series, but you can see the heritage.

Interesting facts. The transverse E series has a windage tray as standard and looks pretty much like one of Daves. It is a five speed overdrive transmission the has the same architecture as the A series 4 speed, fifth speed drives dirrect onto the final drive pinion, and I recon all the A series overdrive five speeds took their concept from this transmission.

I'll get some pictures up when I can, wont be for a while as its somewhere else.

Yeah, that'll be interesting,

Ive had 1800's apart, and the box arangment on those is interesting, but not fiddled with the E series in depth.

Ive just remembered that the input shaft was 1.5mm off the centre of the reverse gear location. Would anyone be able to measure the distance between the edge of the 3rd motion bearing to the edge of the reverse gear shaft hole?

Colin - the closest together would probably be the easiest for accuracy. Im hoping they are far enough apart to use some escort bearings I have found. If not I might have to go down the needle roller route. *oh well*

If they were straight cut I could be tempted. But im planning on running 35psi through it next year and im not sure I'd trust helical gears. *hehe!*

My new uber lightweight backbox arrived today. Im going to brave using aluminium for the centre section, hopefully it won't be too loud.

Looks nice, did you get it made or is it a motorbike one? looks large bore. And why is alloy so loud, is it a resonating problem?

Its just a motorbike one with a 2" bore. Ive heard aluminium resonates more, but my engine is soo quite anyway with an RC40 that im hoping I can get away with it.

Yeah, wasn't it jimster that had an alloy exhaust, but it was too loud so had to change it.

I had a go at TIG welding aluminium this evening.

This was the blobby mess I started with, where I was really worried about blowing holes in it, as it is only 1mm section.

After about 30 mins I managed to get the hang of things, and ended up with this which is semi respectable.
