I'm thinking about getting a Rover 200 as a second car. I'm going to have a look at one this weekend. Anything in particular to look for?

I've found that out :) Supposedly there's an aid for that out.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

thats the lower power one then? i thought the 1.4 16v was 115?

i've driven a few, most fun i had was in a 220sdi. not sure how good they are in the long term as most have been hire cars etc.

cheap car for the money i'd say. but then again a lot of cars are nowadays.

214 is ok, if its a late on you should'nt have as much head gasket probs, it was the earlier k-series up to 1994 that had wanky plastic head locating dowels, the engines after are all metal doweled! plus if you swap the head gasket for a freelander steel one its a massive improvement, just its only that here in the uk, ppl dont use enough antifreeze, or change the coolent at all! 2k though?

my dad has a rover 414 1993 but we have a t-series turbo doner *happy* bang goes the econamy!

rovers are'nt that bad, if you go for the sli modals i think they are the honda engined variant SLI check it out *tongue*

SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

the Search-section on this forum is blummin superb & simple to use, unlike some other forums, without the search-section & the help of this bunch of chaps on here i'll never be able to !!!Start the day with a 998cc turbo!!! :) i'm getting closer though!

Its the other way round, from what I have experienced anyway.

The earlier shape cars upto 1995ish had metal dowels, until they tried saving money by replacing them to plastic.

My mum's 1997 214 had plastic dowels, and the headgasket lasted until 75000 miles. Gasket change was quite easy, and the gasket set came with steel dowels.

The whole job including new bolts, gaskets, head skim etc came to just over £100, so its not the end of the world if it goes.

that sounds like the typical rover to me, still using the old bmc/leyland attitude of using up the parts from years past! tut tut, 75000miles is pretty respecticble for a rover needing a gasket change, i have an article on how to do the head gasket proporly somewhere, if i can find it i'll pop it in the scanner & post it, may be of use to some peeps!

rover do have a viking boat on the bonnet badge!!!!

Honest John tip was good! :)

Viking ship is the main reason for purchasing!

One spanish built car in the fleet suffices in my book *wink* Also, no Viking ship!

i would highly recomend changing the head gasket if you buy one,
Use the freelander sets with a shim,
dont use the bolts again even though rover said you can (if there below a certain length)
if you do you will be doing it again,

get the head skimmed even if you think its all right, and check the liner hights,
I think it should be 0.040" (1mm)

any new gasket set should have the metal dowls in,

apart from the couple of probs they are a good engine if they are looked after properly

my old shape 214si was a great car, ask JF haha

Engine was a stormer, used to redline it from cold day in day out, never complaned.

The gearbox ratios were brilliant too, 2nd gear was fantastic
