From what i have read, you are meant to use grinding paste on new ball joints.
how much do you grind off the ball. till it's smooth ?, should the flat part on top on the ball be rounded off etc. ? and do i use the fine end or the coarse end of the paste
ive done a search with not much luck.
any help would be great.
Thanks.

i use a dab of fine paste - wiggle the ball inside the cup (by hand) to take off any of the 'high spots'. clean it all up and job done.. :)

Lowestoft, Suffolk.

I use a dab of fine paste on all mating faces (pin to seat and pin to domed nut, as cheap repair kits are shite!) tape up the thread and go nuts with it on a battery drill moving it thru all axis (angles) clean them up, add a little oil and move it again thru all axis it it feels smooth (no lumps or tight spots) fit them if not continue untill they are.

No wander why i couldn't do the bottom ones that well, coz i was shimming them with the springs in.. *oh well*
So shimm them with out the brings and thats that..
Would't they go loose after i put the springs in ?..
I even orderd more shimms.. coz i thought i needed 1 shim in between sizes. as it's rather too tight, or too loose///
Ill try that anyway..
Thanks ..

the spring in the bottom keeps it 'quiet' as it wears out..
the spring holds the ball of the pin hard agains the cup so as a result doesnt show any play when checked..

Shim them up tight and by the time you have reached the end of the road, they will have bedded in. Re grease and they are good to go.

I havent replaced any in years, i re shim them so no need to do much else.

I have heard the lapping in thing on the non genuine items, but havent heard anyone mentioning it for Genuine joints

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Yes grinding seems to be more important with the cheap sets. I wish I knew that when I did mine! I just set them tight and within a few weeks I gave them a re-shim and they have been grand since.

How tight's tight ? till you cant move them at all ? As im having nothing but problems with mine :(
There rather too tight, as in cant even move them, or too lose.
Ive grinded them in ok.
I got them from minispares..

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.
