Cheers

petrol or similar on a rag

i found using a hammer to fracture the bigger grittle stuff was the best way, the heater seemed to make it stick more!

I just used petrol on a rag. Worked perfectly plus petrol evaporates so you dont have to wash it off. Well i didn't.lol.

Plus when its colder it comes off in bigger chunks.

Petrol as above or also thinners/white spirit/meths etc will work, whatever you've got knocking about in shed.

Cool, cheers guys. Ive got all of them so will see what works best. Better leave it untill I can get the car out of the garage and into a well ventilated area...lol

9kg of deadening in total, that makes 50kg's in 2 days and not a penny spent! :)

Doesn't look to pretty though! :- /

With straight cuts it wouldnt make any difference if you had deadening or not, so it might as well go.

I know what your saying Roger. But the more I do to it the more impractical it seems to become for long journeys e.g. Riv run etc. My stereo has stopped working and before I found myself turning it off anyway as I prefer the sound of the gears wigning away...lol

Its not a daily driver...the only time I take it out is to shows and out on the weekend for a blat around. :)

Yeah my hand "scraper hand" is still blistered form two days ago.

Matt, cool

Joey,

don't get me wrong I have had the fully striped out, SC gears everywhere monster bannana Mini in the past and it was great fun to drive when I had 2 miles each way to work down country lanes. It became unbearable when the journey increased and included dual carrageways so I had to rip it all out and drop in an MG Metro lump as it was my only car.
I am currently looking at building 3 Mini's. Candice's needs to be kept sane but as rapid as possible as she will be using it as a daily. My own car is being built up as a pure track car and will probalby be about as noisy as it gets as I am looking for ultimate performance & minimum weight. Almost certainly that car will be trailered everywhere, even the 7 miles from my house to where it is stored!
The third will be something between the two others as it is just a toy, needs to be drivable on the understanding I have breakdown cover *wink* but still quick.

We have quite a few people on here that are building their first really hot Mini and may not be aware of the effects on sanity that screaming gears can have. I thought Matt's car was his only car, seems not in which case it won't effect him.

I have spoken to many, many young guys who have built up a quick Mini and then found it unbearable to drive and usually end up selling either the bits or the car at a huge loss. Often that is the last we see of them until they show up in a Saxo or something equally dull.

Sorry for the thread jack, just don't like to see people waste their time and money building something they will hate when "finished" ..... obviously not a problem for Matt but maybe for many reading this.

I have had it as a daily driver for the last couple of years during the show season as I couldn't afford to run two cars at the same time...with the arrival of a company car that is no longer a problem. *wink*

I don't think I'd ever take it to the stage where I couldn't use it on the road as I track time is expensive, and theres plenty more chances to embarrass other supposidly quick cars on the road...lol

I agree with Roger, I'd definitely drive it in road trim if its a daily driver, and if you find that bearable strip it out after.

Interesting read this. I use a mini as a commuter (20 miles each way, A-roads no dual carridgeways), but have a proper car too. It is currently 998 turbo (as some might know). It has all the original sound dedening and MX5 seats.

The turbo has only been on a week and TBH I am a bit dissapointed that it seems louder than the N/A setup (998 stage one is 60bhp blah blah blah), I have taken to using earplugs. I can still hear Radio 4 nice and clear though.

Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

A tale to consider.

I was hurtling along the A14 on the way back from Avon in my N/A 1275 with standard box and 2.76 diff. 15 stone of Sturgeo and the real Axel on board. Pulling about 4000 rpm. Nice and quiet. No problems.

Came across two 200hp minis, both TM members who shall remain nameless. Both wearing headphones and travelling at 70mph.

Something to think about!

I have 3.1 diff and totally standard everything gear wise. I will measure the DB in the car radio off on the way home.
