Now I know there noisey but that don't bother me, how reliable are they?

Box needs a rebuild, and as I plan on turboing my mini soon... Im thinking of just getting a decent box now, rather than just a standard rebuild...

What kinda life span does a straight cut box have?

I plan on using my mini on the odd track day, here and there and everyday

Whos got one, Whos best?

Am I nuts? LOL

Thanks,Radders *happy*

well about every one on here has one mate.

go for minispares clubman sc cr gear set.
minispares 4 pin diff
sc drop gears.

depending on the oil you use and power output.

say 160 bhp engine the box should last a few years before inspection is requiered most times when i do mine and others its mainly just a new layshaft and layshaft bearings which are required.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

I know I sound a bit like a stuck record but I would suggest that you try and have a ride in a Mini, driving across all the normal sort of driving types you do, before yo make your mind up. That is the only real way that your going to know if YOU can live with it before you spend the money.

They are a little more than just "noisey". For example I am more than happy to play on a curcuit until they pull me off in my seven-esq kit (wind noise, road noise, exhaust only about 3ft from my ear) but can only stand to being in a Mini with a SC box for about 20 mins tops and then my ears ring for a good hour afterwards!

You pays your money and takes your choice, some people like the noise ... others find it physically painful. I guess it is all to do with an individuals hearing range and which frequencies they are most sensitive too.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

get the straight cut gears and a pair of ear defenders.

i drove non stop to LeMans with straight cut gears and ear defenders. the ear defenders reduce the noise plus remove wind noise and you can still hear the radio.

my box is the loudest one i've heard

thats good to hear hogster, my SC box has been in 2.5 years now without any inspection. It's my daily drive and running around 160 banana's now but its definately coming out over the winter for a refurb to be safe.

I don't have any isues with the noise mine makes tbh, drove it to kent and back the other weekend, just stuck me headphones in and it was fine.

Live in birmingham and work sheffield

i used to use mini as a daily runner, were a nightmare to start with and then a did the same and bought a pair of ear defenders. all was bliss after that. another good thing was my girlfriend refused to drive it because of the noise. *smiley*

Anyone running a SC final drive, they are meant to be intolerable on anything more than a hillclimb.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

Sprocket runs a sc final drive and drops.

I run SC drops and went all the way to the IMM with them, honestly they wasnt all too loud, you know they are there but i wouldnt say they were bad.

One thing I noticed is the clearance of the idler to primary gear is some what on the large side in my opinion. It may be worth looking at doing away with the paper block to box gaskets and just use weldseal, this would close up the clearance and they will run quieter. Obviously a dry build is in order to make sure the clearances are tolerable *wink*

I wish I had done this as mine are noisey compared to jackmans, however i have no carpets and as jackman said, i run a straight cut rather than the semi helical FD at 3.7, which probibly adds to the noise. I just blank it out.

Quite funny when you see people turning there heads in the street wondering what the noise is, most folk think the box is bolloxed, lol.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

leeds/wakefield.

if you use SC gears, drops and CW there will be something in ther order of 0.040 to 0.050 backlash in total.

Any idea who made my drops, the input says STN0167? The quality seems very good.
