i have cooper alloys (pic below) i was wondering if it safe to run 165 tyres on this width rim, i know having to wide a tyre can cause problems eg beading of the tyre popping off under heavy cornering i was wondering if the yoko A539 165/60 R12 tyres i have will be safe to use on them.

yours paul

No problem.

We run 165/60/12 Falkens on the standard Rover minilites on three of our minis.

Might rub the arch a bit at the front with standard or bent tie bars.

I run them at 30 psi, but I've never tried anything else.

They'll be fine as Axel says, I've previously ran them on the standard Rover Cooper 12" alloys, (4.5 x 12 IIRC).

In fact as well as being fine they'll make the car handle loads better too, go for it!

32 psi sounds high, try 28 psi see how you get on.

I hesitated to say that mine sticks to the road like glue in case the 10" Policeman had a go.

However, it has got fully ajustable suspension and was properly set up by Scruffy which makes all the difference IMO.

LOL.

You'd have to be careful Paul, as both the 10" and 13" policemen could book you for having 12's!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm using the KYBs all round.

How about some rear camber and tracking brackets?

Maybe I should take up the role of 12" Policeman.

I was going to convert to 10s but I'm about to blow the budget on an Innovate LM1, so they will have to wait.

I like nice quiet girly Minis

Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

Just checked some old dealer info I have from about '91 and the quoted pressure for 165/60/12s on the 4.5" rim is 28psi front and rear.

MPi manual says 28psi front and rear also

Guess that makes 28psi a good starting point ... you can always play with tyre pressure when you get used to the car.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Mine rub a bit under certain conditions, like 4 up going to MITP, but the only way to stop it would be to compromise the settings, so I live with it.

OK

I'll try a few shims first, and then wait and see what happens when I go to neg camber arms and adj tie bars over the winter..

You could always try a big hammer.

Mines a bit too low if anything.

Adjusting the tibars to achieve clearance is not a good idea. Tibar length adjusts the caster, which should be set regardless of whether the tyres foul or not.

The only way to make sure that the tyres clear the body is to modify the wings where it catches (or buy and fit sportspack wings)

OK on the castor, What I meant is once I have adjusted it properly with the adjustable tie rods lets see if it still rubs. Its looks like the right side wheel is further forward in the wheel well so thats why I was asking. Of course as I replaced all the front metalwork, I could have got it slightly wrong..

Last night I loosened the front mountings and shimmed them, also jacked up the bodywork as I tightened and its a little better.

Thanks Miniturboman, but I'm not quite ready yet and the postage to USA can be a problem...
