when i was building my engine up i bought a steel lightened flywheel (verto) and new clutch kit etc,

fitted them all thinking nothing of it,

i got everything running went to try to change gear and found the clutch wasnt disengaging.

after a close inspection of everything external i decided a stripdown was needed as i thought i had put the friction plate in backwards.

once apart i found the friction plate to be fine and no trace of any major damage.

it took a good 15 minutes of inspection to find the problem.

on the flywheel, the pedastals which the pressure plate bolts onto had sharp edges, which interfered with the springs on the plate
preventing it from moving (clamping it)

i removed these edges and all is now fine.
just thought i would let you guys know to add to your vast knowledge*wink*

I had the same problem with mine, but realised and ground the pedestals before fitting.

So the theoretical ID of the pedastals is too small such that the diaphram binds?

Not sure I understand the problem here properly - help (want to make sure mine is OK)?!

On a side note I have an U/L set up that came (eventually) from Morspeed in which the threads in the backplate horns stoppped about 3/4 of the way down - meant the bolts bottomed out long before everything was tightened up as it should be - of course I had one snapped bolt before I realised what was happening. D'oh.

its not the diameter thats wrong i will explain,
in the pic you can see the six pedastals which the pressure plate bolts to,
on the lower part of them there are some sharp edges.

http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=33479

on the pressure plate there are three sections which the springs attach to, sticking out from the outer rim.

it is these which get stuck on the sharp edges of the flywheel.

hope this clears things up, i wish i had seen it to begin with would of saved half a day lol

sorry i couldnt post the pics it wouldnt let me and i could find any others good enough.

That's right, I remember now, I had to reduce the radius of the fillet between the drive lug and the pressure plate.

I assembled one of these and never had a problem with it, however it was an injection pressure plate, may be its not the flywheels fault, but rather the pressure plate

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

You may be right, because I bought another one off ebay with the minispares recommended pressure plate and it was OK.
