With wheels that wide it's going to be a handful even on a smooth circuit.

once upon a time i moved the wheels out about an inch or so each side so i could fit 10" wheels and 8.4" discs. the handling was scary. had no self centreing and needed 2 lanes of a motorway to slow down above 70mph

Roger explain?? Why would wider wheels make it a handful? It's all to do with the position the the imaginary line running through pivot points on the hub (swivels in a Mini's case) meets the road relative to the centre of the contact patch. Most modern cars have this point significantly outboard of the centre of contact patch so if you have a tire deflate it produces a force balance that helps keep the car straight and stable so you can stop at a place of your choice rather than a hedge of the cars choice! If you go too far the other way the car will dart about uncontrolably and follow the imperfections in the road to the point it tries to rip the wheel out of your hand. To be perfectly honest anything more than a 6" wide rim (13" dia of course) on about an ET20 offset makes a Mini feel skitish and unpleasant to me, to the point I'd want to fit power steering to be happy I could hold on to it.
