Hi,

just appeared to me: did anyone consider using the number three cam as a balancing shaft to counter bad vibrations??

just a thought..

That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

how would this help the crank?

or am i missing something?

nice idea but the first thing most people do with engines with a balance shaft in is to remove the balance shaft to reduce rotating mass. Not a bad idea for a road car for everyday use though.

I would have thought the mathematics involved would be well out of the scope of the amature engine builder.

How would you measure the frequency of harmonics, then design a balance shaft to counter act it?

The crank damper does a reasonable job of it anyway

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

pardon me, but to remove higher order unbalance the shaft would have to go double the speed or even four times the speed, the crank goes half the speed...

I think I am right on this one?

Honda use balancer shafts. The principle is old.Think its called a Lanchester balancer, runs at twice crank speed.

Change the sprockets then, and modify the oil pump. Try seeing solutions Andrè *wink*

Just checked this,Mercedes also use it,but Lanchester were first in 1911.Even before my time. You need 2 contra rotating shafts running twice crank speed. The weights cancel each other at one point in the cycle, but provide a counter balance at the right moment.

yes thats what I seem to remember from combustion engine class steve. I think this may prove very difficult to do tbh....

I thought the balance shaft rotated the opposite direction to the crank

And how would it fit through the cam bearings if it had balance weights attached?

Dave

nice point, and there is not much space around the cam for the counterweigths, its already troublesome when you fit an 8 porter (cam hits rods). I am not too sure about how the bearings would tackle double the speed and more weight either...

The bearings would live. One should be led to believe that a balancer was infact balanced *wink*

it would have the same imbalance as the thing its supposed to balance out, just opposite....
