Hi,
That sir, is not rust, it is the progressive mass reduction system

nice idea but the first thing most people do with engines with a balance shaft in is to remove the balance shaft to reduce rotating mass. Not a bad idea for a road car for everyday use though. |

I would have thought the mathematics involved would be well out of the scope of the amature engine builder.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be... So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'... On 26th Oct, 2004 Tom Fenton said:

pardon me, but to remove higher order unbalance the shaft would have to go double the speed or even four times the speed, the crank goes half the speed...

Honda use balancer shafts. The principle is old.Think its called a Lanchester balancer, runs at twice crank speed. 'Where does the engine go?' |

Just checked this,Mercedes also use it,but Lanchester were first in 1911.Even before my time. You need 2 contra rotating shafts running twice crank speed. The weights cancel each other at one point in the cycle, but provide a counter balance at the right moment. 'Where does the engine go?' |

yes thats what I seem to remember from combustion engine class steve. I think this may prove very difficult to do tbh.... |

I thought the balance shaft rotated the opposite direction to the crank

And how would it fit through the cam bearings if it had balance weights attached?

nice point, and there is not much space around the cam for the counterweigths, its already troublesome when you fit an 8 porter (cam hits rods). I am not too sure about how the bearings would tackle double the speed and more weight either... Edited by miniminor63 on 14th Sep, 2007. |

The bearings would live. One should be led to believe that a balancer was infact balanced On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

it would have the same imbalance as the thing its supposed to balance out, just opposite.... |
