hi

im just wondering how much differnce there would be in the following engines.

a turbo engine running 7psi all the time with a t3 and a 3.1 final drive, and a standerd mg metro engine but with a 3.1 final drive.

would there be alot of differnce in performance and drivability?

would they be about as reliable as each other?

i ask this because im thinking of making my na mg metro lump which im going to stick in my runaround once iv rebuilt the box, to a more or less standerd turbo engine.

what do you guys think?

cheers

Much more low down torque and about 20-25 more banannas from the turbo.

I think turbo's make the best road engines in a Mini, especially as they make short work of a 2.9 / 2.7 final drive!

I moderate boost, high CR turbo lump will be great to drive on a daily basis.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

i think i might have to live with my 998 lump for a bit longer then and collect a few basic bits to convert my mg lump to a turbo one!

should i go for a 2.9 or a 3.1 final drive then?
iv got a 3.1 fd in my sccr box waiting to go on the project mini.
iv also got a 3.1 fd in a spare box and a 3.44 in another spare box, it makes sence to me to use a 3.1 as i already have one? or would it make it much nicer to drive with a 2.95? i have 10" wheels

im going to get the cr down to standerd turbo spec and maybe just use the phase 2 cam as i have one in the shed doing nothing.

i dont want to spend to much on this build as im still building another mini as a fully blown flying machine! (thats the plan anyway lol!!)

iv done a search and the only thing i need to do to the actal engine is to get the cr down by opening up the chambers? pistons etc should be able to cope?

i know about the other bits like turbo carb, return fuel lines, bulkheadbox etc etc

sorry for all the questions but im realy liking the idea of a low blow turbo runaround mini!!

cheers

3.1 will be ok, 2.9 better on the motorways etc. Like so much else depends on what your going to use the car for most!

Having owned both a stock Metty Turbo & a stock MG Metro, the Turbo was far more responsive, more relaxed cruising and all round better engine. I must have done 20K+ miles in the Turbo and the only problem I had with it was the water pump packing in.

Still regret selling the turbo, and I'm sure I will be beating myself up about on Saturday when I go down Combe.

I quote from regs....The actuator setting is 5.0psi for 0.015" (0.38mm) of actuator rod movement.
Must admit, there might be more to the measurements that I'm aware of. :(
