What kind of boost do you think you could safely run on an intercooled but otherwise stock metro turbo motor if you ran 105 octane?

We have access to 100 octane, ((ron+mon)/2) formula, which is roughly equivalent to 105 octane in your world. When I had my Evo VIII, I could bump up the boost by 4 or 5 psi when running 100 over the normal 91 available here.

i tried 113 octane and it did make it run nicer. but it was 3 times the price of optimax, and due to the cost i didnt get chance to tune the car properly to run it and as such made no difference to performance.

About 1psi pre octane point iirc...

Shed - without upping the boost or advancing the ign you wouldn't have seen a difference.

What about that octane boost additive crap?? Maybe it would be worth looking into, for drag use ect.

1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.

only if you set your car up for the drag stip.. ie modify the ign and the boost.

so if it's 1psi per RON, then with 105 RON you could in theory run 15psi on a standard metro.

This is based on four star (what metro turbos were designed to run on I presume) having a RON of 97 and the standard boost being 7psi.

However, a standard metro could run 10psi on 97, so in theory you could run 18psi on a standard motor.

OK, from my notebook.

Cyclopentane- 141 ron
Tri Methyl Benzene 170/136 R/M
Toluene 124/112
Xylene 150ish (Ron)
Di Cyclopentadiene 229/167!!!!!!
Cylopentadiene 218/149

The last 2 you can get hold of from chemical suppliers and are used in octane boosters. Toluene/Xylene mix is known as Cellulose Thinners. An alternative is to get the most non-aromatic petrol you can get (which is 95 IIRC) and add as much lead and Methyl Aniline as you can. This is 4% by weight for TEL/EDB mix and 2% Methyl Aniline. MA is exceedingly nasty stuff if you snort it or pour it on your bare skin. That's the recipe for the closest thing to avgas you can make in your shed.

If this is true about 1 psi per point, it frees up some possibilities. What I would like to see done is one of you lot with a rolling road to test some celly thinners and see what happened.

Bearing in mind that colour impure thinners aka brush thinners is usually available for about 70p/L. It could be a lot cheaper than "other fuel".

When I drove the Capri to africa, we smelt the fuel which stank of thinners (aromatic hydrocarbons) and advanced the ignition a bit......

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

My mate used 105 stuff in his rally car, and that smells of thinners (its called 'nocar' iirc?)

Thanks for the info. The normal high octane fuel around here is 91 octane. So if I run 100, I'm actually upping the boost by 9 octane. So if it runs properly at 7psi with the 91 octane fuel, it sounds like I could increase the boost for short periods by up to 9psi.

My plan is to have two MJ maps....one for the piss water 91 octane and the other for the 100. The 91 map will be for regular driving and the other will be for dyno days and general showing off.

Too bad MJ can't also control the boost level....because I'll still have to toggle up the boost on the EBC when I switch over to the high octane map. And more importantly, I have to remember to turn the boost down when I go back to the low octane fuel.

91 is the best in CA? didn't know that.. its 93 here on the east coast.

Dont forget that US octane numbers are not the same as UK octane. US uses R+M/2 UK uses RON the end result is that 91 octane US is something around 95 UK..

Yep, (RON+MON)/2.

You should be able to get 94 at Sunoco, unless they stopped selling it in the 4 years since I lived in PA.

Unfortunately, 91 is the best you can buy at the regular stations. Because of smog issues, CA has it's own diluted fuel formulation.

They did!! 93 is the best now....and I have started noticing recently that some are also only selling 92.
