I have been using the copper gaskets from Keith Calver, they have worked fine for me. They are more like a shim than a gasket.

The copper gaskets work a treat but I can not bring myself to spend any money with KC as he'd only spend it on having his ego inflated further .... *wink*

I've made some from copper sheet then annealed it back before now ... works a treat.

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

I intened to give this a go as it closes up the clearance on the drop gears (need to be sure its not too tight *wink* ) Making them a little quieter.

Dont see it being an issue other than that, theres an o ring for the oil pick up and the weldseal will do the rest.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Always found it a bit odd that there is an o ring, a gasket and sealant all doing the same job :-

Not only that, the oring seals against the gasket and the gasket seals against the block with a little sealer. I always cut the gasket around the oring to allow it to do its job properly!!

whats the point of the gasket if you bladder it with sealer, whats the point in the sealer if theres a gasket?

Engines that are leak free from the start need a little more time to put together *tongue*

Thank's for the replies, sound comment as usual.
I an building a quick 1293 N/A motor and drilled and tapped the block for 5/16" bolts and cleaned up the mating faces of block and box .
I remembered seeing that some Racers don't bother with a sump gasket and that K Calver used a copper shim, so I thought i would do a little measuring as the thickness of the gasket has an effect on the running clearance of the primary and idler drop gears.
I had bought a Payen gasket set in which was a sump gasket at 0.016" thick.
Calver shims are 0.009" thick and not having an original paper gasket I would have a guess at 0.007"
This would seem to me to be quite a spread.
Could this contribute to noisy idler gears, particularly S/C ?
I have done a dry assembly and found no problem with the mesh of the gears if the gasket is ommited.
Sprocket has it right I think and that is exactly the conclusion I had come to.
So no gasket, and a smear of Wellseal it is.
Regards
Dave

My machinist uses nothing else. He also put me on to Rocol Dry Molly Paste as well for assembly
