my be opening a can of worms here but i was wondering with all these 16v conversions about what makes an a series what is it.

well it cant be the gearbox can it? as they do transverse and longiwotsit boxs.

the block in my opinion is just a block that houses the internals and there not that much different from any other are they? well apart from the 3 mains set up.

so is it the head that makes it, if so does that mean that if you swop the head then its no longer a a series?

dont mean to cause any trouble just wondered what peoples opinions are and thought it might be a interesting dissucussion.:)

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

i think the genrall consensus is the box and block and crank realy

the head goes along way as well

A 'A' series in a standard configuration in my opinion. A twin cam is a different engine.
Example....A standard ford X'flow becomes a BDA with a twincam head.
Just my opinion, and as you say....don't want to open a can of worms!

lol Carl, what have you started.

I think the head is the main part or what makes the "a" series so crap to tune lol. With it's crappy ports!

Best 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds @116 mph
First 5 port miniturbo to make over 200 bhp on a carb?
First 5 port miniturbo to make over 200 bhp on Injection?

Well Ok I will say something

Astin Rover group, labled it the A series, Austin Rover developed 'variants' (operative word) in inline and transverse configurations, so its not the gearbox. They also developed 'variants' with the oil filter in different places, with and without solid tappet chests, small bore big bore, so its not the block. They also developed 'variants with overhead cams, but granted, those never reached, production, so in a way its not the head.

That leaves the crank, rods and pistons configuration. The crank is a three main bearing crank, the rods with the exception of the cooper S 970 are the same lenght center to center (970 rod is esentialy the same with an offset machined little end)

Is it this thats what makes it an A series?

TBH I recon the block, box and clutch make an A series. *tongue*

There are loads of other different head configurations e.g. 7 port, 8 port etc that could be used and it would still be classed as an A series.

Even with changing the head, the majority of the A series 'common problems' still exist like the clutch, 3 bearing cranks, still drip oil on the drive, and will still give you greif when your in the most awkard place and when your not carrying a tool box...lol

definately the head is my feeling , i always look to see the fastest 5 port ,and think thats the target across the forums etc . i do think the alternative headed engines are deff a technical tour de force ,and so on ,but are in my mind in a development section of thier own ,tom carl matt jim et all show massive determination to get to where they have ,but i always see them in a diferent area,of engine design ,not better or worse ,just different.

i think the place where to two types of approach meet ,and have a lot in common ,is not bhp ,but on the subject of transmission of that power to the ground ,and reliably using it all ,we are coming to the point where ,rather than bhp being the deciding factor in performance , vehicle dynamics and tyre technology play a huge part in getting those extra few tenths .
