I'm getting to the roof staage of my new workshop, (long time waiting) There is a small area of the roof 4.5m x 3m (6.75 sq)triangle (shown in red on the photo) which needs to be a flat roof.
As the roof is like a triangle, the pitch will be deminishing from 3 deg one end, to around 12 deg the small end, is this going to be a problem??

What is the best to put on this roof, felt or fibreglass?

any thoughts?

Cheers

Jimbo

also in the front half of the garage, I want to have raised ties, (as I'm having a lift installed) how high can these be, is it 1/3 of the roof hight?

leeds/wakefield.

Jim , when you raise the ceiling braces, in practice you should up the depth of the roof spars, as there is now a bending load on the section below any raised brace, [ the section between the wallplate and the brace,.
best to go for the lightest tile you can, and make sure you bolt through at the junction of spar and ceiling, you can get anti slip dog rings to go between for a belt and braces. go up a third if you want to do as above and there shoud be no probs,

felt has a life of 25 yrs thereabouts , fibreglass would last a bit longer i'd have thought,
you can get rubber coverings , its a firestone product, and i think it has a big lifespan,

jim its only a small area you can put felt fiberglass but you will only come back to it

use LEAD code 7 a bit more expensive but it will las 2000 years
thats why they put it on churches

watch for the pikeys though

Steve, according to an english heritage consultant i know from past conversation, lead has a usable life expectancy of 100 years, york minster has had the leaded light mural windows replaced a good few times in its 800 years life. i think its 800 years old , could be wrong. but not about the lead

you can use a product called Decathane. Its a liquid applied system with glass fibre mat reinforcement. It was originally used for repairs but over time the industry have learnt and you can now get a guarantee for it. Its supplied by Liquid Plastics I think. The other option is to go for lead - provided it is installed correctly, will last longest.

cracking workshop!

I had EPDM put on my dormer flat roofs. I think it's the same stuff that Rob has mentioned. It wasn't too expensive, and came with a 20 gaurentee and 50 year expected life. In my experiance you'll be lucky to get 15 years out of felt and you risk burning your house don putting it on!

EPDM is a single ply covering - very good performance but needs installing by a professional - absolutely fine for the job provided there is no foot traffic over it as it can puncture

fastcarl, gthink it will see jimster out though and its better than fiberglass felt or epoxy and ruberoid

its would be my personal choice
i thought it would be more then 100 years on code 7

With regards to felt we have just had the felt replaced on the garage roof which managed nearly 25 years (north facing). I guess it depends if you plan to stay put for the next 25 years.
